Chapter 13 - The Plasma Torch

A shower of blinding white sparks exploded into the laboratory as the plasma torch burned fiercely through the steel hinges of the fire door. The heavy metal groaned under the heat, bowing inward under the coordinated weight of the tactical team outside.
"They're going to breach in thirty seconds!" Dr. Aris Thorne yelled over the deafening roar of the torch, rushing to help Dr. Elena Vance secure the titanium briefcase.
Clara stood frozen near the center console, her breathing shallow and erratic. The pain in her midsection had vanished entirely, replaced by a strange, heavy numbness that spread outward from her core down to her fingertips. She looked down at her maroon t-shirt; the bioluminescent purple geometric pattern had completely consumed her abdomen, glowing with a steady, eerie intensity that cast long shadows across the white laboratory floor.
"Elena, hurry! The reset!" Clara demanded, her voice unnaturally calm, imbued with a strange, collective resonance that made both scientists stop and stare at her in awe.
Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy pneumatic injector from the briefcase, loaded a glowing blue vial of the synthetic suppressant into the chamber, and rushed to Clara’s side.
"Hold still, Clara. This is going to stop your heart for precisely six seconds before the reset cycle forces your natural immune system to reboot," Elena warned, her hands shaking slightly as she pressed the cold metal nozzle firmly against Clara’s collarbone.
"Do it," Clara whispered, closing her eyes.
With a sharp, pneumatic hiss, the blue serum injected directly into her bloodstream. For a split second, nothing happened. Then, Clara’s eyes flew wide open. Every muscle in her body locked rigid. A profound, absolute cold washed over her system, and the roaring sound of the laboratory faded away into total, profound silence as her heart flatlined.
At that exact second, the fire door gave way with a violent crash. The heavy steel slab fell inward, kicking up a massive cloud of dust as three heavily armored tactical operatives poured into the lab, their weapons raised and locked on the three figures standing by the console.
"Drop your weapons! Federal containment protocol enacted! Nobody moves!" the lead operative roared, stepping forward into the room with his rifle leveled directly at Dr. Aris Thorne’s chest.

Dr. Elena Vance stood frozen, her hands still resting on Clara’s shoulders as Clara’s limp body began to slide slowly toward the floor.
