Chapter 3 - The Stranger in the Parking Lot

Clara whipped her head around, her heart slamming against her ribs with sledgehammer force. Peering through the dust-streaked glass of her car door was not Officer Jenkins, but a man in a rumpled gray trench coat. He was perhaps fifty, with sharp, weathered features and intense, sleepless eyes that scanned the parking lot with frantic urgency. He tapped the glass again, harder this time, gesturing wildly for her to roll the window down.

"Open the door, Ms. Miller. You don't have much time," the man said, his voice muffled by the glass but carrying an undeniable, commanding gravity.

Clara froze, her hand hovering over the key in the ignition. How did he know her name? She had never seen this man in her life. The humiliation inside the store felt like a lifetime ago, replaced now by a cold, escalating dread that seemed connected directly to the strange bruising beneath her shirt. She slowly cracked the driver-side window down an inch, the crisp night air rushing into the stale interior of the car.

"Who are you? Stay away from me or I'm honking the horn," Clara threatened, though her voice lacked conviction.

The man leaned in close to the narrow opening, his breath frosting in the autumn air. "My name is Dr. Aris Thorne. I was inside the store. I saw what happened when you lifted your shirt. I know what's happening to your body, Clara, and the supermarket is the least of your problems."

Clara’s breath hitched. A doctor? Was this some kind of sick joke, or a hallucination brought on by sheer stress? She stared at his piercing eyes, searching for malice or deception, but found only a grim, exhausting terror that mirrored her own.

"You're crazy. I'm going home," Clara whispered, starting the engine.

Dr. Thorne slammed his palm flat against the window. "Drive home, and you won't survive the night. They are tracking the cellular degradation. Look at your arm right now."

Confused and terrified, Clara slowly rolled up her maroon sleeve. Beneath her skin, faint purple lines were already creeping up toward her elbow, pulsing in time with her racing heartbeat.
