Chapter 9: Unraveling at the Seams

The immediate aftermath of the hallway incident sent shockwaves through the administrative offices of Oakridge High. Principal Davies summoned both Maya and Leo to his private office, attempting to defuse the situation before it could draw outside attention. The room smelled faintly of old leather and expensive cologne. Principal Davies sat behind a massive mahogany desk, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses and fixing Maya with a stern, disapproving look. "Maya, I’ve received reports of escalating altercations between you and Leo," Davies began, his tone dripping with paternalistic condescension. "Leo is under a great deal of stress right now with college applications and athletic commitments. I expect you to show your fellow students a bit more grace." Maya sat upright in her chair, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Her voice was remarkably calm. "Mr. Davies, Leo physically assaulted me in the hallway after intentionally dumping a cash deposit on me in the cafeteria earlier this week. If grace is required, perhaps it should be expected from the student who thinks the rules don't apply to him." Before Davies could formulate a reprimand, the heavy oak door of the office swung open without a knock. Marcus stood in the doorway, flanked by Officer Ramirez, the school’s campus resource officer, and a woman in a sharp grey suit who flashed an official state badge. "Principal Davies," the woman said, her voice crisp and authoritative. "I am Agent Vance—no relation to the student—with the state Department of Education's investigative division. We are executing a warrant for the seizure of all fiscal records related to the Oakridge Athletic Booster Club." Principal Davies turned completely pale, his mouth opening and closing silently like a landed fish. Leo, sitting in the corner chair, stared in absolute horror as the reality of what was happening finally crashed down around him.
