Chapter 4: An Unexpected Alliance

The bell signaling the end of the school day echoed through the halls, sending a stampede of teenagers toward the exits, but Maya remained locked inside the bookstore, her mind racing over the implications of the financial records glowing on the monitor. A sharp knock on the frosted glass made her jump. She looked up to see Marcus Sterling standing on the other side. Marcus was a senior known for his quiet demeanor, brilliant intellect, and complete indifference to social hierarchies. He wore a simple black t-shirt and carried a stack of library books, his expression characteristically neutral. Maya hesitated before unlocking the door and pulling it open a few inches. Marcus didn't wait for an invitation; he stepped inside and locked the door behind him, holding up his hands in a gesture of harmlessness. "I saw what happened in the cafeteria today, Maya," Marcus said quietly, his voice low and steady. "And I know what you picked up off the floor." Maya tensed, her hand dropping instinctively toward her hoodie pocket where the flash drive rested. "What are you talking about?" she asked, her tone defensive. Marcus offered a reassuring, tired smile. "I’m on the student council tech committee. Leo Vance has been throwing money around like it’s water for weeks, buying votes, paying off referees for the varsity games, and flashing cash he definitely doesn’t earn from his weekend job. Today, when he dropped that deposit, he wasn't just bullying you—he was trying to stash evidence in a place where people would look the other way because they assumed it was just teenage drama." Maya looked at him, searching his eyes for any sign of betrayal or malice, finding only genuine concern and a shared sense of justice. She slowly pulled the flash drive from her pocket and placed it on the counter between them. "It's all here, Marcus," she whispered. "Every single stolen dollar."
