Chapter 6: Whispers in the Hallway

The following morning, the atmosphere in the hallways of Oakridge High had changed subtly. Word of the cafeteria confrontation had spread, embellished by rumor mills into various epic tales of defiance. When Maya walked through the front doors wearing her grey hoodie, several students who usually pretended she didn't exist offered small, hesitant nods of recognition. But the attention wasn't entirely positive. Near the trophy case, Leo Vance stood surrounded by his usual entourage of varsity players. His dark hair was styled with the same aggressive perfection, but his eyes were bloodshot and restless. As Maya passed, Leo stepped directly into her path, blocking her way. His varsity jacket brushed against her shoulder, and the false charm he usually wore was replaced by a tense, desperate snarl. "You picked up my money, Vance," Leo said, his voice low enough that only she could hear, though his cronies watched eagerly from behind him. "Every single bill. I hope you didn't happen to notice anything else lying around on that floor." Maya stopped, looking up at him without a trace of intimidation. Her pulse raced, but her voice remained ice-cold. "Maybe you should be more careful with your belongings, Leo," she replied evenly. "Gravity has a way of revealing things people try to keep hidden." Leo’s face paled beneath his tanned skin. He clenched his jaw so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He realized then that she hadn't just been cowed by his public humiliation; she had understood the subtext of the attack. Before Leo could formulate a threat, Marcus appeared at Maya’s side, holding a stack of history textbooks with an expression of polite boredom. "Morning, Leo," Marcus said smoothly. "You're blocking the lockers. Some of us actually have classes to attend." Leo glared at Marcus, knowing he couldn't cause a scene in the middle of a crowded hallway without drawing unwanted attention from the administration. With a low growl, Leo shoved past them, muttering obscenely under his breath. Maya and Marcus continued down the hall, knowing the countdown had officially begun.
