Chapter 7: The Anonymous Packet

By Thursday afternoon, Maya and Marcus had formulated a meticulous plan. They knew that local authorities wouldn't take a USB drive handed over by two teenagers at face value, especially given the influence wielded by the booster club. They needed hard copies, organized chronologically, sent to an entity that couldn't be easily silenced or bribed. Working late in the school library after closing time, illuminated only by the green glow of a networked printer, they printed out the most damning financial summaries, bank statements, and email transcripts implicating the school board treasurer and several key administrators. Each page was carefully collated, placed inside a manila envelope, and addressed to the regional investigative desk of the state Department of Education, as well as the city’s leading independent newspaper. As the final page slid out of the tray, Maya looked at the thick stack of paper with a mixture of dread and satisfaction. "This is it," she whispered, her fingers resting on the cardboard envelope. "Once we drop this in the mail chute downtown, there’s no turning back." Marcus nodded solemnly, sealing the flap with heavy-duty tape. "Good. People like Leo and his father have operated above the rules for too long because nobody ever dared to look at the math." They didn't use the school's mailroom; instead, Marcus slipped the heavy package into his backpack, planning to make the trip during his dentist appointment the next morning. As they packed up their laptops, Maya felt a strange sense of liberation. The fear that had gripped her chest in the cafeteria was gone, replaced by a steady, unyielding determination to see justice done, not just for herself, but for every student whose trust had been exploited by the very people sworn to protect them.
