Chapter 11: Rebuilding the Foundation

With the corrupt leadership of the booster club removed, the school board was forced to appoint an interim oversight committee, including elected student and faculty representatives. To the surprise of many, Maya Vance was nominated by the student body to sit on the financial review board, a position that allowed her to help allocate the recovered funds directly where they belonged: into the neglected arts programs, the science laboratories, and campus work-study wages. The first meeting of the new committee took place in the school library, far away from the stale air of the principal's office. Maya sat at the long wooden table alongside teachers, parents, and Marcus, reviewing budget proposals with meticulous care. Principal Davies had been placed on indefinite administrative leave pending a full investigation into his complicity, replaced temporarily by an inspiring retired educator named Dr. Henderson, who actively encouraged student voices. When Maya spoke during the meeting, proposing a transparent online ledger system for all student fundraising events, the entire room listened with absolute respect. No longer viewed simply as the quiet girl who worked the bookstore register, Maya was now recognized as someone of fierce integrity and unyielding strength. After the meeting adjourned, Dr. Henderson pulled her aside near the bookshelves. "Oakridge owes you a great debt, Maya," the interim principal said softly. "It takes a remarkable amount of courage to stand up to systemic corruption when everyone else is looking away." Maya looked down at her hands, remembering the cold linoleum floor of the cafeteria and the crumpled bills scattered around her feet. "I didn't do it for praise, Dr. Henderson," she replied quietly. "I just wanted things to be fair."
