Chapter 5: The Weight of Proof

Under the amber glow of the bookstore’s desk lamp, Maya and Marcus spent the next hour examining the contents of the flash drive. The documentation was staggering. For over a year, a systematic skimming operation had been redirecting funds intended for the school's underprivileged arts and science programs into private offshore accounts controlled by a shell company. At the center of the paper trail was the athletic booster club, overseen by Leo’s father, with Leo himself acting as the courier for cash handoffs around campus. "This isn't just school politics," Marcus murmured, scrolling through a spreadsheet that listed dozens of illicit transactions. "This is embezzlement, and it involves a lot of adults who thought high school kids wouldn't know how to look beneath the surface." Maya felt a cold knot twist in her stomach. She thought about her mother, who worked two jobs just to keep their apartment heated, and how hard students at Oakridge had worked to raise money for new laboratory equipment that never seemed to arrive. "If we turn this over to Principal Davies," Maya suggested cautiously, "will it actually be investigated?" Marcus let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "Davies is deep in the booster club's pocket. He gets new turf for the football field, and he looks the other way. If we go to the administration directly, the drive will disappear, and we’ll probably get expelled for hacking or theft." Maya crossed her arms, her jaw tightening with resolve. The memory of Leo standing over her in the cafeteria, pointing and laughing while the entire school watched, flashed through her mind. He had wanted to humiliate her, to make her feel small and powerless. Instead, he had accidentally handed her the keys to his family's undoing. "Then we don't go to Davies," Maya said quietly, her voice ringing with a newfound firmness. "We find another way."
