Chapter 8: The Confrontation at Locker 412

Friday morning brought a sudden, suffocating tension to the campus. Whispers were circulating about a missing audit report, and rumors of an impending state investigation had begun to leak through the faculty lounge. Leo Vance was nowhere to be seen during first period, but by lunchtime, he was waiting by Maya’s locker with a frantic, unhinged look in his eyes. His varsity jacket was unzipped, his hair slightly disheveled—a rare crack in his immaculate facade. As Maya spun the dial on her combination lock, Leo slammed his hand against the metal door right beside her head, making her jump. "Where is it, Maya?" he hissed, his voice cracking with panic. "You took something of mine from the floor on Tuesday. I want it back, now." Maya slowly closed her locker door, turning to face him without flinching. She was tired of cowering, tired of the intimidation tactics that had defined the social hierarchy of Oakridge High for years. "I don't know what you're talking about, Leo," she said, her voice steady and clear. "You dropped your cash. I picked it up and gave it back. If you lost something else, maybe you should check your own messy habits." Leo grabbed the front of her grey hoodie, bunching the fabric in his fist and pulling her forward. Several students nearby gasped, stepping back to clear a circle around them. "Don't play games with me, you little—" Before Leo could finish his threat, a heavy hand descended onto his shoulder, spinning him around with authoritative force. It was Coach Miller, the head of the varsity football team, whose face was thunderous with anger. "Release her right now, Vance," the coach boomed, his voice echoing off the tile walls. "What the hell do you think you're doing in the middle of the hallway?" Leo released his grip on Maya’s hoodie, stumbling back a step as he realized he had crossed a line even his athletic privileges couldn't protect him from.
