Chapter 6 - The Opening Fridge

The heavy brass padlock didn't just unlock; the steel shackle seemed to disintegrate into rusted flakes before their eyes. With a slow, groaning creak, both doors of the stainless steel refrigerator swung wide open. A thick, unnatural mist billowed out from the shelves, smelling faintly of formaldehyde and old memories. The bright interior light flickered once, twice, and then went completely black, plunging the kitchen into deep, shadowy gloom.
Little Zoe screamed, finally breaking her silence, and buried her face deeper into Maya’s black top. Maya wrapped her arms around her daughter, but her fierce gaze never left the dark interior of the open refrigerator.
"Close it!" Marcus yelled, lunging forward with desperate energy. He grabbed the right refrigerator door, intending to slam it shut and secure the latch. But as his fingers grazed the cold metal handle, an icy grip shot out from the darkness inside the fridge and clamped tightly around his wrist.
Marcus gasped, trying to yank his arm back, but the grip was like a hydraulic vise. The fingers were impossibly cold, freezing the blood in his veins. From the pitch-black depths of the appliance, a figure began to emerge—not a ghost, but a horrifyingly tangible reflection of Marcus himself, wearing an identical brown suit, but with skin as gray as ash and hollow, blackened eye sockets.
"You left me in the dark, brother," the figure whispered, its jaw moving with a sickening crunch. "You thought locking the basement was enough? I live in the cold now. I live wherever you hide your secrets."
Maya didn't scream. She stepped forward with cold, calculated precision, holding a heavy glass jar filled with a dark, shimmering liquid she had grabbed from the counter. Without a single word of hesitation, she unscrewed the lid and hurled the contents directly into the face of the creature holding Marcus.
The entity shrieked—a sound like grinding metal—and released Marcus’s wrist with a violent jerk. Marcus stumbled backward, sprawling hard onto the floor, clutching his freezing, purple-bruised wrist. The dark liquid hissed as it made contact with the creature's face, burning away the ash and revealing a terrifying, grinning skull underneath.
"Run!" Maya roared at Zoe, grabbing the young girl by the hand.
Marcus scrambled backward on the floor, his eyes wide with horror as the creature stepped entirely out of the refrigerator, its tall frame blocking the exit to the hallway. But as it turned its attention toward Maya and Zoe, a loud, heavy thud echoed from the ceiling directly above them.

The attic door, which had been bolted shut with iron chains since they moved in, suddenly burst open, raining dust and heavy iron links down onto the kitchen floor.
