Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Suit

The iron handle of the basement door turned downward with a slow, agonizing squeak. Marcus stood frozen in the hallway, his boots seemingly glued to the hardwood floor as the impossible happened right before his eyes. The door, which he had personally inspected and confirmed was permanently fused shut, gave way by a fraction of an inch. A thin sliver of absolute darkness spilled out from the gap, swallowing the warm kitchen light.

"That's impossible," Marcus muttered, his fingers twitching as he backed away slowly. "I hired a professional contractor. The bolts were reinforced with steel plates."

"Steel plates only work against the living, Marcus," Maya said, her voice dropping to a harsh, breathless whisper. She pulled Zoe closer, shielding the young girl behind her black top. "And whatever is down there stopped being human a long time ago."

Marcus shook his head, desperately trying to anchor himself in logic. He was a practical man, an executive who dealt in numbers, contracts, and hard facts. Yet, the overwhelming dread pressing down on his chest was undeniable. The scratching sound returned, faster and more violent this time, accompanied by the heavy thud of a shoulder slamming against the inside of the basement door.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

"Open the door, brother," a voice rasped from the dark seam. It was a voice Marcus hadn't heard in half a decade—a voice belonging to a man who was buried six feet deep under a granite tombstone three states away.

Marcus stumbled backward, colliding heavily with the kitchen island. His eyes went wide with sheer horror as he stared at the moving handle. "David? No... no, that's a sick joke. You're dead. I went to the funeral. I saw the casket lowered!"

"Funerals are for people who stay in the ground," the voice mocked, a dark, raspy chuckle vibrating through the wood.

Maya suddenly lunged forward, grabbing a heavy cast-iron skillet from the counter. With desperate strength, she slammed the iron base against the vibrating basement door, pinning the latch shut with her entire body weight. Her face was drenched in sweat, her chest heaving as she glared at her bewildered husband.

"Stop standing there like an idiot!" Maya screamed over the violent rattling of the door. "Help me push this heavy cabinet over the threshold right now, or we won't survive the next ten minutes!"

Marcus hesitated for a split second, his mind racing through a maze of impossible realities. But as the wooden door groaned under a massive, unnatural impact from the other side, he finally snapped out of his paralysis. He grabbed the heavy oak pantry cabinet, shoving it forward with all his might.

As the cabinet slammed against the door, the scratching stopped abruptly. Total, suffocating silence filled the house, broken only by a chilling note left on the kitchen floor.
