Chapter 11 - The Hand on the Hem

Marcus froze, his muscles locking instantly as the cold fingers pulled gently against the fabric of his trousers. He looked down slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Peering out from the dark threshold of the nursery was a little girl with curly black hair, wearing a light yellow t-shirt identical to Zoe's. Her face was pale, her eyes wide and dark, mirroring Zoe's exact features.

"Daddy," the little girl whispered, her voice sounding as if it were traveling through a long, empty tunnel. "You forgot to lock my door."

Zoe gasped, stepping out from behind Maya’s black top. She stared at the little girl in the doorway, her mouth slightly open in a mixture of shock and recognition. "She looks like me," Zoe whispered, her voice trembling. "She has my face."

"She is you, Zoe," the strange woman called down from the hole above, her voice ringing clear through the stone cavern. "Or rather, you are the continuation of what they couldn't erase. Every generation, the house demands a child to feed the foundation. Your mother tried to cheat the curse with padlocks and rejection, but you can't starve a house that was built on hunger."

Marcus knelt down slowly, ignoring the damp chill of the stone floor. He looked into the hollow, sorrowful eyes of the little girl holding his trousers. He reached out a trembling hand, his fingers hovering just an inch from her small shoulder. "Who are you?" he asked, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down his cheek.

"I am Chloe," the little girl whispered. "Your first daughter, Marcus. The one you forgot in the fire."

Marcus jerked his hand back as if burned. Memories—long suppressed, buried beneath layers of corporate ambition and manufactured happiness—suddenly flooded his mind. He remembered the smoke. He remembered the shouting. He remembered standing outside a burning room with a heavy padlock in his hand, sealing the door to protect his reputation while the flames did their silent work.

"No," Marcus choked out, clutching his head in his hands. "No, I didn't mean to... the fire was an accident."

"An accident is when you don't hold the key," Chloe replied softly, her small hand releasing his trousers. She stepped back into the dark nursery, the white wooden crib behind her beginning to glow with a faint, eerie blue light.

Maya rushed forward, grabbing Marcus by the shoulders and pulling him back. "Don't listen to her, Marcus! She's a ghost created by the guilt of this house! If you step into that room, you'll never come out!"

"And if we stay here, Maya, what happens to Zoe?" Marcus asked, his voice dead, devoid of any fight left.

May you like

As if in answer to his question, the ground beneath their feet began to split down the middle, a deep fissure opening up and revealing a glowing red abyss directly beneath the nursery door.
