Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Second Key

Marcus took another step forward, his polished leather shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. His gaze flickered between the heavy brass padlock on the refrigerator and Maya's tense, defensive stance. The harsh fluorescent kitchen lights cast long, jagged shadows across the room, amplifying the sudden chill in the air. Little Zoe shrank back further into the corner, burying her face in the folds of her light yellow t-shirt as quiet, muffled sobs shook her small frame.

"Maya," Marcus repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a dangerous edge of authority. "What did you mean by another lock? Answer me."

Maya swallowed hard, her throat dry. She crossed her arms tightly over her black top, creating an impenetrable barrier between herself and her husband. Her short black hair framed a face that looked cornered, yet fiercely determined to keep whatever dark secret she was guarding buried deep inside the walls of this house.

"You heard what I said, Marcus," Maya replied, her voice dangerously quiet. "It is what it is. You don't need to know everything that goes on in this kitchen while you are away playing corporate savior."

Marcus frowned, his dreadlocks shifting over the collar of his brown turtleneck as he shook his head in disbelief. He reached out a hand, his long fingers hovering just inches away from the cold metal shackle of the padlock.

"This is my house too," Marcus argued, his patience wearing razor-thin. "And that is our daughter crying in the corner because you denied her a meal. Since when do you lock up the food? Are we running out of money, or is there something else you are hiding from me?"

"Money has nothing to do with it," Maya snapped back, her eyes flashing with sudden fury. "Control has everything to do with it. You want to walk in here acting like the head of the household, but you have no idea what happens after dark in this place. You don't see what Zoe has been doing."

Before Marcus could press her further, a sudden, sharp rap echoed from the hallway. It wasn't the front door. It was coming from the basement door near the pantry—a door that Marcus knew, with absolute certainty, had been bolted shut and welded shut from the inside for the past three years.

Both adults froze, their eyes darting toward the dark hallway as the knocking grew louder, accompanied by a faint, metallic scratching sound.

"What is that?" Marcus whispered, his hand dropping from the fridge.

Maya’s face drained of all color, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she whispered, "That is the third lock."
