Chapter 1 - The Cold Kitchen

The heavy clang of ceramic against stainless steel echoed through the quiet kitchen, breaking the evening tension like a shattered window. Maya tossed her half-eaten plate of chicken into the trash can without a second glance. The remnants of dinner slid down into the dark abyss, symbolizing the abrupt end of the evening. Little Zoe stood near the kitchen island, her eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and hollow hunger. Her small hands clutched the hem of her light yellow t-shirt.

"I haven't eaten," Zoe whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Maya spun around on her heel, her expression sharp as glass. Her neatly styled short black hair barely shifted as she glared down at her daughter. The air in the room grew instantly thick, suffocating every ounce of warmth.

"Dinner is over for you," Maya said, her tone absolute and unyielding.

Before Zoe could respond, Maya strode toward the sleek stainless steel refrigerator. From her pocket, she retrieved a heavy brass padlock. With practiced, cold efficiency, she looped the thick steel shackle through the double handles and snapped it shut with a definitive click. The metallic sound resonated through the modern, minimalist kitchen like a gunshot.

Just then, the heavy footsteps of Marcus echoed from the hallway. He stepped into the kitchen, wearing his tailored brown suit and matching turtleneck, looking exhausted from his long day at the office. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Zoe’s tear-stained face to Maya’s rigid posture.

"Why is there a lock on my fridge?" Marcus asked, his voice low and laced with confusion.

Maya turned back to face him, her jaw tight and her eyes darting nervously toward the counter. Marcus stepped closer, his gaze locking onto the gleaming padlock before shifting back to his wife. A cold sweat beaded on Maya's forehead as she realized she could no longer hide the truth.

Marcus stared intensely at the refrigerator lock with a stern, questioning expression while Maya looked back nervously.

"Another lock on what?" Marcus asked, stepping closer.
