Chapter 13 - The Final Click

The heavy oak door of the nursery slammed shut with a definitive, echoing thud that vibrated through the entire subterranean chamber. Maya screamed, running to the edge of the chasm, her hands clawing desperately at the air as if she could reach across the impossible gap.
"Marcus! Open this door right now!" Maya shrieked, her voice cracking with raw, unadulterated anguish. Little Zoe stood frozen behind her, tears streaming down her face as she clutched her light yellow t-shirt.
From the other side of the heavy wooden door, the sound of a brass padlock looping through iron handles echoed clearly. A second later, the sharp, heavy click of the lock snapping shut resonated through the cavern, louder than thunder. The red glow pulsing from the fissure beneath the cellar floor instantly flared into a blinding column of white light, illuminating the entire underground vault.
High above, the strange woman in the charcoal coat raised the ancient iron key one final time. She inserted it into the air itself and turned it to the left.
The stone walls of the cellar began to fold inward like origami, the darkness retreating as the harsh, fluorescent lights of a modern kitchen suddenly flooded back into view. The stainless steel refrigerator, the kitchen island, the trash can, and the hardwood floor snapped back into their proper places with a violent, snapping sound of reality resetting itself.
Maya and Zoe found themselves standing in the middle of their clean, minimalist kitchen, exactly where the nightmare had begun hours ago. The air was warm and still, smelling faintly of roasted chicken and cleaning supplies, as if nothing had ever happened.
Except for one detail.
The heavy stainless steel refrigerator was still locked, but the padlock wasn't brass anymore. It was made of blackened iron, and hanging directly beneath it, hooked onto the steel shackle, was Marcus’s tailored brown suit jacket, neatly folded with the gold-plated name tag pinned to the lapel.
Maya fell to her knees on the clean tiles, her black top stained with dust and tears. She reached out with trembling fingers and touched the cold fabric of the jacket.
Zoe slowly walked over, kneeling beside her mother. The little girl reached up, her small fingers brushing against the heavy iron padlock on the refrigerator.
"Is Daddy inside?" Zoe whispered, her voice barely audible in the quiet kitchen.
Maya couldn't answer. She pulled her daughter into a tight, desperate embrace, staring at the locked refrigerator as the digital clock on the appliance suddenly flickered, changing from the current time to zeros across the board.

And then, from inside the sealed refrigerator, came the faint, unmistakable sound of a key turning in a lock.
