Chapter 3 - The Welded Seam

The rhythmic tapping against the basement door grew increasingly frantic, sending a cold shiver straight down Marcus’s spine. He looked from the terrifying sound back to his wife, whose breath was coming in short, shallow gasps. Maya gripped the edge of the kitchen island so hard her knuckles turned completely white. Little Zoe stopped crying instantly, her wide, terrified eyes locked on the dark hallway as if she expected something monstrous to tear right through the wood.
"Maya," Marcus demanded, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to sound commanding. "That door has been sealed since we moved in. You told me the previous owners had structural damage down there. You told me it was empty."
"People lie, Marcus," Maya hissed, her voice cracking under the immense pressure. "Especially when the truth is terrifying enough to tear a family apart piece by piece."
Marcus ignored her warning. He stepped past her, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The tailored fabric of his brown suit felt suddenly constricting, making it difficult to draw a full breath. As he approached the hallway, the metallic scratching stopped, replaced by a low, rhythmic whisper that sounded chillingly human, yet entirely distorted. It sounded like someone—or something—was calling his name from the pitch-black abyss below.
"Marcus... let me out," the muffled voice echoed through the thick wooden panels.
Marcus recoiled as if he had been physically struck. He turned his head sharply back toward his wife. Maya was shaking her head violently, her hands clamped over her ears as if trying to block out a sound that only she had lived with for months.
"Who is down there?" Marcus yelled, his voice echoing off the modern, minimalist walls. "Maya, answer me right now or I swear I will take a crowbar to that door tonight!"
"You can't!" Maya screamed, finally breaking her silence as tears spilled over her cheeks. "If you break that weld, you won't just let something out... you'll let him back in."
Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches from the rusted iron latch of the basement door. A sudden, freezing draft swept up from the floorboards, carrying the distinct scent of old iron and wet earth.
"Him?" Marcus asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Who are you talking about? My brother died five years ago."
May you like
Maya slowly dropped her hands from her ears, a horrifying, humorless smile twisting her lips as the basement door handle began to slowly turn from the inside.
