Chapter 8 - The Price of Defiance

The heavy brass poker struck the mahogany wainscoting just inches from Julian’s head, splintering the wood with a deafening crash. Julian had instinctively jerked backward, pulling Clara down behind the heavy carved oak console table in the foyer. Wood splinters rained down over their shoulders like shrapnel, stinging their skin.
"Stay down!" Julian hissed, his hand finally closing around his smartphone inside his jacket pocket. He dragged it out, his thumb frantically swiping to unlock the screen, but the display remained stubbornly dark. The battery icon flashed a tiny, empty red bar before shutting down entirely. The signal jammers Marcus had undoubtedly installed in the walls were draining the device dry.
From the stairs, Marcus’s footsteps echoed methodically as he continued his descent, the leather soles of his shoes clicking against the marble floor.
"Give it up, Julian," Marcus called out, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of panic. "You’re fighting a tide with a teacup. The estate is sealed, the communications are blocked, and by morning, the narrative will be that you and your mistress fled the country with embezzled funds."
Clara pressed her back hard against the carved legs of the console table, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. Her breathing was coming in short, agonizing gasps, her hand locked over her abdomen as a sharp wave of pain shot through her lower back.
"Mr. Sterling... the baby," Clara whimpered, her fingers digging painfully into Julian’s sleeve. "The stress... I think... something is wrong."
Julian looked down at her, terror gripping his heart far more fiercely than any threat Marcus could conjure. He saw the genuine, agonizing pallor of her skin and the way her entire body trembled. This wasn't just a corporate coup anymore; it was a race against time to save two lives.
Julian ignored Marcus entirely. He dropped to his knees beside Clara, wrapping both arms around her to shield her from any further assault.
"Listen to me, Clara. Look at my eyes," Julian instructed, his voice dropping to an intense, steady whisper that demanded her focus. "You are going to breathe with me. In... and out. We are getting out of this house. I promise you."
"Hey! Get away from the table!" one of the plainclothes security guards shouted, heavy footsteps marching closer across the marble floor.
Julian didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins, overriding his fatigue. He reached out blindly behind the console table, his fingers wrapping around the heavy brass base of a decorative floor lamp. With a sharp, powerful heave, he ripped the heavy metal fixture from its floor mount and hurled it directly into the path of the approaching guard.
The lamp crashed into the guard's shins with a heavy thud, sending the man sprawling backward onto the floor with a sharp cry of pain.
Seizing the micro-second of confusion, Julian scooped Clara up into his arms, ignoring the searing pain in his own shoulder from the near-miss with the fireplace poker. He bolted toward the hidden service corridor behind the grand staircase—a narrow, brick-lined passage the staff used to move between floors without disturbing the family.

"After them!" Marcus roared from the foyer, his calm facade finally shattering into raw rage. "Don't let them reach the carriage house!"
