Chapter 13 - The Final Gambit

The rain beat a relentless tattoo against the roof of the state trooper cruiser. Julian stopped dead in his tracks, turning slowly to face the black town car idling on the wet asphalt. Arthur Vance leaned forward in the back seat, the interior dome light casting a sickly yellow glow over his sharp, calculating features.
"You're wasting your time with the girl, Julian," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the hiss of the storm. He tapped the manila envelope against his knee. "This isn't just another copy of the trust. This is the original amendment signed by your father thirty years ago—the one that states any heir born outside of a sanctioned marital union forfeits all rights to the Sterling estate, reverting the entirety of the holdings to the corporate board."
Julian took a slow step toward the car, the rain plastering his dark hair to his forehead. His eyes were cold, devoid of any hesitation. "My father amended that clause on his deathbed, Arthur. I watched him sign it. And I have the video recording from his private study to prove it."
Arthur’s smug expression flickered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered, offering a thin, chilling smile. "A recording can be contested in probate court for years, Julian. By the time a judge rules on it, the company will be liquidated, the accounts frozen, and that child in the ambulance will be growing up in a state orphanage with no last name."
Julian didn't flinch. He reached into his wet jacket pocket, pulling out a small, waterproof flash drive that he held up between two fingers, letting the red emergency lights catch its metallic casing.
"The recording isn't on a server, Arthur. It’s backed up across three independent cloud nodes currently syncing live to the district attorney’s office right this second," Julian replied, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Marcus is in handcuffs, Eleanor is in a holding cell, and you’re about to join them if you don't drop that envelope into the mud right now."
Arthur stared at the flash drive in Julian’s hand. He looked past Julian toward the ambulance, which was already closing its rear doors and preparing to speed away toward the city hospital. The calculus in Arthur’s head was simple: the house of cards had finally collapsed, and staying loyal to a sinking ship was a fool's errand.
With a slow, calculated motion, Arthur dropped the manila envelope out the window. It landed squarely in a puddle of muddy water, the red wax seal dissolving instantly into the grey slush.
"You're a ruthless bastard, Julian," Arthur muttered, shaking his head. "Just like your old man."
May you like
"No, Arthur," Julian said, turning his back on the town car as he jogged toward his own vehicle. "I'm just protecting what's mine."
