Chapter 6 - Sirens in the Courtyard

The wail of the police sirens outside the tall French windows cut through the quiet afternoon, filling the grand dining room with an urgent, flashing red-and-blue strobe light. The shadows danced wildly across the broken eggshells and the silver ice bucket lying on the Persian rug. Clara gripped Julian’s arm tighter, her knuckles turning white as she watched Eleanor being escorted toward the double doors in handcuffs.

Eleanor didn't scream, nor did she cry out. Her silence was far more terrifying. As the two officers guided her past the threshold, she turned her head just enough to lock her hollow, unblinking eyes onto Clara. It was a look that promised retribution from beyond whatever prison cell awaited her.

"Get her out of my sight," Julian muttered to the nearest officer, his jaw tight as he shielded Clara’s body with his own.

The lead officer nodded, giving Julian a solemn look before pulling Eleanor out into the wide marble foyer. The heavy oak doors swung shut, muting the harsh screech of the patrol cars idling in the circular gravel driveway.

Julian exhaled slowly, the adrenaline finally beginning to fade from his system, leaving him feeling hollowed out. He looked down at Clara, noticing the heavy sheen of sweat on her forehead and the way her knees buckled slightly under her weight. The stress of the confrontation, combined with the physical shock of the egg-throwing incident, was taking a severe toll.

"We’re going to the hospital right now, Clara," Julian said firmly, slipping an arm securely around her waist to support her. "No arguments. The car is out front."

"Mr. Sterling... the staff quarters," Clara murmured, her voice weak. "My things... my medical records are in the bedside drawer."

"Forget the things. Your health and the baby are all that matter," Julian interrupted, guiding her carefully past the sticky mess on the floor and toward the foyer.

As they stepped out of the dining room and into the expansive, chandelier-lit hallway, the quiet of the manor felt oppressive. This house, which had once been a symbol of elite luxury and societal triumph, now felt like a mausoleum built on lies and betrayal. Julian led Clara toward the front entrance, where his personal town car was waiting with the engine running, its driver standing anxiously by the open door.

Just as they reached the grand staircase, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows near the second-floor landing.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, instantly pulling Clara behind him. His eyes shot up toward the dimly lit staircase, where the heavy velvet drapes hung like stage curtains.

A figure stepped out from behind the velvet folds. It was Marcus Vance, Julian’s chief financial advisor and legal counsel, the very man who had helped draft the Sterling family trust years ago. Marcus looked calm, almost chillingly relaxed, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he looked down at them from the landing.

"I wouldn't go out that front door just yet, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the cavernous foyer. "The police have the perimeter locked down. And unfortunately for you, they have a warrant to search the entire estate—including the safe in your study."

Julian narrowed his eyes, a cold realization dawning on him. "Marcus... what did you do?"

May you like

Marcus smiled faintly, resting a hand on the mahogany banister. "I didn't do anything, Julian. But I did receive a signed transfer of power from Eleanor this morning, granting me full control of the Sterling holding company the moment she was detained."
