Chapter 5 - The Medical Mystery

The word "investigation" hung in the air like a guillotine blade waiting to drop. Eleanor’s hands remained clawed in mid-air for a fraction of a second before dropping limply to her sides. All the fight drained out of her in a single, catastrophic instant, leaving behind a woman hollowed out by her own ambition. The pristine white pantsuit suddenly looked like a straightjacket she had willingly strapped herself into.

"You didn't," Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the refrigerator in the adjacent butler's pantry. "You called the D.A.? After everything we built? After twenty years of protecting this family's reputation in the papers?"

"You didn't protect the family, Eleanor. You protected your bank account," Julian replied, carefully folding the legal document and sliding it back into the manila envelope. He slipped it securely into the inside pocket of his dark suit jacket, patting it twice to ensure it was safe. He then turned his attention back to Clara, his demeanor shifting from cold corporate executor to a man desperately seeking redemption. He knelt down beside her again, ignoring the egg yolk smeared across the knees of his trousers. "Clara, can you stand? We need to get you to a doctor immediately. The stress of today... it’s too much for you and the baby."

Clara nodded, her tears finally slowing down as a small flicker of hope sparked in her chest. She reached out a trembling hand, and Julian took it, pulling her up with surprising gentleness. As she rose, the weight of her pregnancy was painfully evident, her breathing heavy and labored.

"Thank you, Mr. Sterling," Clara whispered, leaning slightly against his shoulder for support.

Eleanor watched them with eyes burning with a venomous, desperate hatred. She realized in that moment that she had lost everything—her husband, her wealth, her social standing, and her freedom. But people like Eleanor Sterling do not go down quietly. As Julian guided Clara toward the double doors, stepping carefully around the broken eggshells on the floor, Eleanor slowly backed toward the mahogany sideboard. Her hand crept behind her back, her fingers wrapping around the heavy, silver-plated ice bucket resting on the silver tray.

"You're not taking everything from me," Eleanor muttered, her voice low and crazed.

Julian heard the subtle clink of metal against silver just in time. He spun around, pushing Clara behind him with one arm, his reflexes saving them both as the heavy silver ice bucket flew past his ear, shattering a priceless stained-glass sconce on the wall behind them.

The heavy oak double doors of the dining room suddenly flew open once more, not from someone entering, but from the weight of three uniformed police officers rushing into the room with their badges held high.

"Eleanor Sterling! Step away from the table with your hands where we can see them!" the lead officer commanded, his hand resting firmly on the holster of his sidearm.

May you like

Eleanor froze, the silver tray clattering to the floor as the cold steel cuffs clicked into place around her wrists, but as the officers dragged her away, she fixed her dead, unblinking eyes entirely on Clara’s protruding belly.
