Chapter 12 - Racing Against Time

The vintage Packard’s headlights cut a harsh, yellow swath through the winding country road, the engine whining under the strain of high speeds it hadn't seen in decades. Inside the cabin, the air was thick with tension. Clara lay back against the cracked leather seat, her eyes squeezed shut, her teeth biting down hard on her lower lip to suppress a scream.
"Almost there, Clara. Stay with me. Just breathe," Julian repeated like a mantra, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were translucent. He glanced sideways every few seconds, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The blood on his cheek had dried, dark and stark against his pale skin.
The heavy rain that had threatened all afternoon finally broke, large, heavy drops slamming against the windshield in a chaotic rhythm that the ancient wipers struggled to clear.
"Mr. Sterling... it hurts... it hurts too much," Clara gasped out, her fingers digging into the fabric of her egg-stained maid's apron as a harsh contraction gripped her body.
"I know, I know. I'm right here," Julian said, his voice softening, stripping away all the corporate armor he had worn his entire life. In this dark, rain-swept car speeding through the rural outskirts, he wasn't the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar holding company; he was just a man terrified of losing everything that truly mattered.
Suddenly, the red-and-blue flash of an ambulance appeared in the rearview mirror, cutting through the sheets of rain with a piercing wail. A state trooper cruiser followed closely behind, its high-beams signaling Julian to pull over to the shoulder.
Julian slammed on the brakes, easing the vintage car onto the gravel shoulder just as the ambulance pulled in directly ahead of them, blocking the lane. Red emergency lights bathed the interior of the Packard in a pulsing, hypnotic glow.
Within seconds, two paramedics in yellow raincoats were pulling the passenger door open, unrolling a collapsible stretcher with practiced efficiency.
"Sir, step back, let us work," the lead paramedic instructed calmly, his hands moving swiftly to check Clara’s vital signs.
Julian scrambled out of the driver's side, stepping out into the pouring rain. The cold water instantly soaked through his ruined suit, but he didn't care. He watched as they carefully transferred Clara onto the stretcher, her face pale, her eyes locking onto his one last time before they secured the oxygen mask over her mouth.
"Don't leave me," Clara’s muffled voice pleaded through the plastic mask.
"I'm right behind you. Every inch of the way," Julian promised, grabbing his coat as he prepared to follow the ambulance into the night.
As he turned back toward his car, a sleek black town car pulled up slowly behind the police cruiser, its hazard lights blinking silently in the downpour. The rear window rolled down smoothly, revealing the cold, weathered face of Arthur Vance, Marcus’s estranged older brother and the senior partner of the Sterling family’s original legal firm.

"Looking for this, Julian?" Arthur called out over the sound of the rain, holding up a manila envelope identical to the one Julian had secured earlier.
