Chapter 1 - The Splattered Truth

The golden afternoon light slicing through the tall French windows of the Sterling manor dining room was suddenly fractured by a wet, sickening crunch. Eleanor Sterling stood poised in her pristine, immaculate white pantsuit, her chest heaving beneath the weight of tightly held fury. The pearls resting against her collarbone clicked softly as she breathed. On the floor before her, raw yellow and clear albumen dripped slowly down the crisp black and white fabric of a maid uniform. A pregnant girl, barely twenty-five, whimpered against the polished mahogany base of the dining table.
"What is this? Make another!" Eleanor hissed, her dark eyes flashing with a toxic cocktail of panic and disdain. The words tasted bitter in her mouth, carrying the venom of a woman whose carefully curated universe was violently unraveling at the seams.
The young maid, Clara, clutched her rounded belly with trembling hands. Her face was pale, stained with frantic tears that mixed with the splattered egg yolk pooling around her knees.
"Please... the baby!" Clara choked out, her voice a fragile, breaking reed in the cavernous, silent room.
Eleanor raised a hand, her manicured fingers trembling despite her attempt at absolute control. She took a sharp step forward, ready to hurl another insult, or perhaps another fragile orb from the silver bowl on the buffet table. But the heavy wooden double doors at the far end of the room suddenly burst open with a resounding crack that shook the crystal chandelier.
Julian Sterling rushed into the luxurious dining room. His dark suit was slightly disheveled, his tie pulled loose, and his face carved into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic. He had heard the crash from the foyer, and the sight before him froze him in his tracks.
Eleanor spun around, her face instantly contorting from icy wrath to desperate supplication. Tears streamed down her cheeks, fresh and heavy, completely unregulated now that a witness had arrived.
"It’s not what you’re thinking!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with high-pitched terror as she threw her hands toward her husband.
Julian ignored her plea entirely. He bypassed her completely, his eyes locked onto the weeping, egg-soaked girl on the floor. He stepped closer, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked in his cheeks. The air between the couple grew razor-thin, charged with a devastating tension that threatened to suffocate them all.
"You told me she had left," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that cut through the room like a scalpel. "You told me she lost the baby."

Clara raised her tear-soaked eyes from the floor, looking directly at Julian with a terrifying revelation in her gaze. "He didn't know I was still here, Mr. Sterling. And he doesn't know the real reason you locked me in this house."
