Chapter 7 - The Viper in the Study

The silence in the grand foyer grew suffocating. Julian stared up at Marcus Vance, the man he had trusted with his corporate portfolio for over a decade. The gold-rimmed glasses catching the chandelier light suddenly looked less like an accessory of a respectable businessman and more like the glint of a hunter’s rifle scope.

"A transfer of power?" Julian’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a rising tide of fury. He kept his arm firmly around Clara, feeling her body shudder against his side. "Eleanor doesn't have the legal authority to sign over the holding company without my explicit consent as primary trustee."

Marcus chuckled softly, descending the first few steps of the grand staircase with deliberate, unhurried grace. He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a crisp, folded piece of parchment, holding it up between two fingers like a winning poker card.

"She didn't sign it as a trustee, Julian. She signed it as the sole power of attorney over your personal and financial assets," Marcus replied smoothly, his smile never reaching his eyes. "A document you signed yourself three years ago, right after your father’s stroke, when you were declared temporarily unfit to manage the estate. Don't you remember? Or were you too busy playing corporate savior to read the fine print?"

Julian’s breath hitched. The memory slammed into him—a chaotic week of hospital visits, heavy medication, and endless stacks of paperwork handed to him by Marcus himself, assuring him it was just a formality to keep the board of directors from panicking. He had signed it blindly, trusting the man who stood before him now.

"You planned this," Julian accused, taking a threatening step forward toward the stairs. "You and Eleanor. You used her paranoia to trap Clara, and you used the trust to empty the accounts."

"Business, Julian. Just business," Marcus replied, his tone remaining infuriatingly calm. He stopped halfway down the staircase, looking down at Clara with a cold, analytical gaze that made her skin crawl. "And that child you’re protecting? Once the paternity is legally contested under the new corporate restructuring clause, that baby won't inherit a single square foot of this estate. In fact, under the amended bylaws, any illegitimate heir born on the premises is considered trespassing property."

Clara gasped, clutching her belly tightly. "He's insane... Mr. Sterling, we have to get out of here."

"You're not going anywhere, my dear," a cold, smooth voice echoed from behind them in the shadows of the hallway archway.

Julian and Clara spun around. Standing near the heavy double doors of the study were two armed private security guards in plain black suits, blocking the only exit to the courtyard. Their holsters were unclipped, their hands resting casually near their sidearms.

Julian’s mind raced. He patted the inside pocket of his jacket, feeling the hard outline of the legal document and his phone. He needed to reach his phone, dial the district attorney's direct line, and get the police back inside before Marcus’s security detail could lock them away.

Slowly, deliberately, Julian slid his hand toward his pocket, keeping his body positioned as a shield between Clara and the guards.

"Don't do it, Julian," Marcus warned from the stairs, his voice losing its pleasant veneer and hardening into absolute steel. He snapped his fingers, and one of the guards stepped forward, raising a heavy brass fireplace poker he had picked up from the hearth.

Before Julian could pull his phone free, the security guard lunged forward with terrifying speed, bringing the heavy brass rod down toward Julian’s shoulder with a sickening crack.
