Chapter 8: The Unraveling Lie

The apartment felt smaller, the walls closing in around them as the truth settled heavily into the space. Chloe sank slowly onto the cream-colored sofa, burying her face in her hands. The sophisticated, untouchable persona she had worn like a designer gown at the reception was completely gone. She looked small, fragile, and utterly defeated. But Julian felt no pity, only a cold, clinical detachment. He sat in the armchair opposite her, waiting for her to speak.

"My parents cut me off last year," Chloe whispered through her fingers, her voice muffled and broken. "They said I needed to learn financial independence. But I couldn't live like that. I am used to a certain standard of living. When I met you, Julian, you had everything I wanted. Stability, success, a family with resources." She looked up, her mascara smudged, her eyes pleading. "I loved you, Julian. I do love you. I just... I panicked. I thought once we were married, the debts wouldn't matter anymore."

Julian listened with a heavy heart. He recognized that under different circumstances, he might have been willing to help her work through her financial troubles if she had been honest from the beginning. Trust, once shattered, could not be repaired with excuses. "You didn't love me, Chloe," Julian said softly. "You loved what I could provide, and what my mother’s money could buy. That is not a foundation for a marriage. That is a business arrangement where I was kept in the dark."

Chloe stood up abruptly, desperation giving her a burst of sudden energy. "We can fix this! I’ll get a job, I’ll cut up my credit cards, we can go to counseling like your mother wants! Don’t throw this away, Julian. Think about what people will say! An annulment after one day? It will ruin your reputation at the firm. Everyone will know." Julian shook his head slowly, feeling a strange sense of liberation at the thought of the scandal.

"My reputation will recover, Chloe. Living a lie for the next twenty years would destroy me," Julian replied. He stood up, walking toward the bedroom to gather a few changes of clothes. "I’ve already instructed my legal team to draft the paperwork for an annulment based on fraudulent misrepresentation. You can stay here for the next few days while you figure out your living arrangements, but I am moving back to my mother’s guest house."

Chloe let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, her voice rising in pitch. "You’re running back to mommy? Are you serious? You’re going to let a two-thousand-dollar champagne argument destroy our entire life?" Julian paused at the bedroom door, looking back at her one last time. "It wasn't about the champagne, Chloe. It was the final straw in a mountain of deceit. I wish you the best." With that, he closed the bedroom door behind him, tuning out her muffled screams of fury.
