THE CHAMPAGNE SHUTDOWN / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom cast a warm, golden glow across the polished mahogany floor, illuminating a scene of sudden, jarring discord. Chloe, radiant in her strapless white wedding dress with ornate detailing and glittering diamond earrings, stood rigid. Her chest heaved with suppressed fury. Across from her stood Eleanor, a picture of poised elegance in a grey lace dress, her grey hair styled in a flawless updo. Chloe’s voice cut through the ambient murmur of the stunned wedding guests like a jagged blade, demanding an immediate two thousand dollar cash payment for the premium champagne.

Julian, trapped between his furious bride and his composed mother, stepped forward quickly. His black tuxedo felt suddenly restrictive, the white shirt collar choking him as he tried to intervene. Eleanor refused calmly, stating she had already contributed far beyond the agreed budget. Chloe’s eyes flashed with naked greed. To Chloe, this wedding was a display of social dominance, and every slight needed immediate financial compensation. She sneered, her lips tightening into a bitter line as she threatened to halt the entire reception if her demand was ignored.

Eleanor did not raise her voice. Instead, with deliberate, unhurried grace, she opened her silver clutch. Her manicured fingers brushed past a compact mirror and a tube of lipstick to retrieve a sleek smartphone. The contrast between Chloe’s frantic agitation and Eleanor’s absolute stillness was striking. Guests strained their necks, whispering behind cupped hands. Julian grabbed his wife’s elbow, whispering for her to calm down, but Chloe shook him off with a violent jerk of her shoulder.

Eleanor pressed the speed-dial button with a steady thumb and raised the device to her ear. Her expression was a mask of cold resolve. She spoke into the phone with icy clarity, bypassing any pleasantries. She instructed the venue manager to terminate all catering services, halt the music, and shut down the party immediately. The words hung heavily in the suffocating silence of the grand hall.

Chloe’s face drained of color. The arrogance vanished instantly, replaced by wide-eyed panic as the gravity of the threat registered in her mind. She stared at Eleanor, her mouth opening slightly in silent disbelief. The heavy tension in the room thickened, transforming a celebration of union into a tense arena of accountability. Eleanor lowered the phone, her gaze fixed steadily on her daughter-in-law. The music ground to a halt with an awkward scratch, and the reality of the shutdown began to sink in for every single person present.
