Chapter 7: Confronting the Ledger

Back at the penthouse, the air felt charged with static electricity. Julian walked through the front door to find Chloe pacing the length of the living room, her phone pressed to her ear. She was speaking in a high, shrill voice to her mother, complaining about Eleanor’s tyranny. When she saw Julian enter, she abruptly hung up the phone and marched toward him, her eyes blazing with fury.
"Where have you been?" Chloe demanded, pointing an accusing finger at his chest. "I’ve been calling your phone for two hours! My mother is threatening to call her lawyer. This is harassment, Julian. Your mother is treating us like children, and you’re acting like a coward." Julian didn’t flinch. He walked past her toward the kitchen, tossing his car keys onto the counter with a sharp metallic clatter. He turned around slowly, his expression devoid of the warmth she was accustomed to manipulating.
"I was with my mother, and then I met with her legal team," Julian said evenly. Chloe paused, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her features before she masked it with defensive anger. "What does that even mean? Are you plotting against me with your mother? I am your wife!" Julian reached into his briefcase and pulled out the manila folder Eleanor had given him. He tossed it onto the glass coffee table between them.
"It means I know about the debts, Chloe," Julian said, his voice cutting through the silence. Chloe stopped dead in her tracks. Her color drained, leaving her skin a pasty white. She stared at the manila folder as if it were a venomous snake. "What... what are you talking about? What debts?" Julian let out a dry, humorous laugh. "Three different luxury boutiques, Chloe. Unpaid balances totaling over thirty-five thousand dollars. Plus a pending civil suit from a high-end travel agency for a cancelled trip last year. You lied on our prenuptial financial disclosure."

Chloe’s hands began to tremble. She crossed her arms tightly once more, her posture defensive. "Those are old debts! They were supposed to be cleared! It’s none of your business anyway; we’re married now! Your family has millions, what is thirty-five thousand dollars to your mother? It’s pocket change!" Julian felt a wave of nausea. The sheer entitlement in her voice sickened him. It wasn't just about the money; it was about the deceit.
"It’s about trust, Chloe," Julian said quietly, stepping closer to her. "You lied to me before we even signed the marriage license. You manipulated me into believing you were financially secure, while secretly planning to use my mother’s generosity to bail you out of your reckless spending habits." Chloe’s eyes welled with real tears this time, but they were tears of cornered desperation, not genuine remorse. She realized her game was up.
