Chapter 6: The Ultimatum

The atmosphere in the family law office was sterile and suffocating. Eleanor sat across from Julian in a pair of plush leather armchairs, a mahogany coffee table separating them. The walls were lined with law books and framed degrees, but the room felt more like an interrogation chamber than a sanctuary. Eleanor’s expression was unreadable, her hands folded neatly over her leather handbag. Julian looked exhausted, dark shadows under his eyes testifying to a sleepless night filled with arguments.

"I am not giving you an ultimatum to be cruel, Julian," Eleanor said softly, breaking the silence. "I am doing this because I love you, and I refuse to watch you spend the rest of your life as a hostage to someone else's unending greed." Julian looked down at his hands, interlocking his fingers. "I know, Mom. But freezing our accounts completely? Canceling our cards? Chloe is threatening to file for an annulment. She says I’m letting you control our marriage."

Eleanor let out a quiet sigh, leaning back against the leather cushion. "An annulment might actually be the kindest thing that could happen to both of you right now, son. Think about it. You’ve been married for less than twenty-four hours, and your wife has already demonstrated that her affection is entirely conditional on your bank balance and my willingness to fund her lifestyle. Can you honestly see yourself building a family with someone like that?"

Julian swallowed hard. The thought of an annulment felt like a personal failure, a public admission that he had made a catastrophic mistake. In the legal world, he was trained to assess risk and protect his clients from bad contracts. Yet, when it came to his own life, he had ignored every glaring red flag. "She promised she would change," Julian murmured, sounding unconvincing even to himself. "People get stressed before weddings. The pressure gets to them."

"Stress reveals character, Julian, it doesn't create it," Eleanor replied firmly. "When pressure is applied, people show you who they really are underneath the polish and the pleasantries. Chloe showed you that her first instinct when denied something trivial is public humiliation and financial extortion." She reached into her handbag and pulled out a manila folder, placing it gently on the table. "I had my legal team look into the prenuptial agreement you both signed."

Julian looked up, surprised. "The prenup? Why? We signed it a week ago." Eleanor opened the folder, revealing a series of highlighted clauses. "Because I wanted to ensure you were protected. But I noticed a discrepancy in the asset disclosure that Chloe provided. She omitted a significant amount of consumer debt and three pending lawsuits regarding unpaid luxury boutique bills." Julian stared at the papers, a cold dread washing over him. The illusion of his marriage was officially dead.
