Chapter 5: Morning After the Storm

Morning sunlight pierced through the sheer curtains of the penthouse apartment, illuminating the discarded remnants of a fairy-tale wedding that had turned into a nightmare. Chloe’s wedding dress lay crumpled in a heap on the hardwood floor near the walk-in closet, its intricate beadwork catching the morning light. On the kitchen island, a single unread wedding card sat beside a cold cup of black coffee that Julian had poured hours earlier.

Julian sat at the dining table, staring at the screen of his laptop. His phone had been buzzing intermittently since dawn with text messages from relatives asking what had happened at the reception, and business associates expressing polite confusion. He ignored them all. He felt a hollow ache in his chest. The realization that he had married a woman who valued a brand of champagne over his family’s dignity was a heavy pill to swallow. He massaged his temples, trying to ward off a stress-induced migraine.

The bedroom door clicked open, and Chloe emerged wearing a silk bathrobe. Her hair was messy, and the heavy makeup from the night before left dark smudges under her eyes. She looked at Julian with an expression of cold calculation rather than remorse. She walked over to the kitchen island, poured herself a fresh glass of water, and leaned against the counter. The tension in the room was palpable, thick enough to cut with a knife.

"We need to talk about the honeymoon," Chloe said, her voice devoid of emotion. "Tickets to the Maldives are non-refundable. If your mother thinks she can cut us off, she’s wrong. You need to call her this morning, apologize for her behavior, and get her credit card details for our travel expenses." Julian slowly closed his laptop screen. The soft snap echoed loudly in the quiet apartment. He looked up, his eyes cold and steady, a look Chloe had never seen on his face before.

"I am not calling my mother to apologize for your greed, Chloe," Julian said, his voice remarkably calm. "And we are not going to the Maldives. In fact, I have already contacted the travel agency this morning to cancel the reservations and request whatever refund is possible." Chloe slammed her glass down on the marble counter, water splashing over the rim. "Are you out of your mind? You can't just cancel our honeymoon! That was my dream trip!"

"My mother called me an hour ago," Julian continued, ignoring her outburst. "She isn't cutting us off completely, but she is freezing the joint account until we attend mandatory financial and marital counseling. Furthermore, she wants the forty thousand dollars returned if we cannot demonstrate mutual respect within thirty days." Chloe’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. Her jaw dropped as the full magnitude of her miscalculation crashed down upon her.
