THE CHAMPAGNE SHUTDOWN / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Unraveling Banquet

The dismantling of the reception was swift and merciless. Waiters in crisp white shirts moved between the tables with quiet efficiency, collecting half-empty wine glasses and placing silver domes over uneaten entrees. The contrast between the festive decor and the grim reality of the shutdown was jarring. Chloe watched in horror as the towering five-tier wedding cake, adorned with sugar peonies and edible gold leaf, was wheeled away toward the kitchens untouched. Her wedding day was dissolving into an administrative nightmare.

Guests began to murmur more loudly as they realized this wasn’t a dramatic pause, but a permanent end. Coats were retrieved from the cloakroom with hurried apologies to the attendants. Chloe’s mother, a woman who had spent months boasting about her daughter’s affluent marriage, marched over with a face mottled with red anger. She glared at Eleanor, demanding an explanation for the humiliation. Eleanor met her hostile gaze without flinching, delivering a concise reminder of who had funded ninety percent of the extravagant affair.

Julian found himself caught in the crossfire of two furious mothers. He tried to shepherd Chloe toward a quiet corner, but she pulled away, tears of frustration finally pricking the corners of her eyes. She wasn’t crying from sorrow, but from unadulterated rage. Her meticulously planned Instagram stories, designed to make her peers envious, were ruined. Worse still, the financial safety net she assumed Eleanor provided had just slammed shut with the force of a bank vault door.

Eleanor walked toward the exit, her gold necklace catching the light of the remaining wall sconces. She paused by the doorway and looked back at the chaotic scene. She felt no satisfaction, only a profound exhaustion. She had tried to warn Julian about Chloe’s extravagant habits and superficial values during their engagement, but her son had been blinded by infatuation. Now, the blinders were off, and the true cost of their union was becoming glaringly apparent.

As the last of the guests filed out into the lobby, whispering and checking their phones, the ballroom grew dim. The warm lighting was replaced by harsh overhead service lights, exposing the dust motes dancing in the air. Chloe stood alone on the polished dance floor, the heavy train of her wedding dress pooling around her designer shoes like sea foam after a storm. Julian stood a few feet away, his head in his hands, realizing that the most important day of his life had just transformed into an expensive catastrophe.
