Chapter 6: Smoke and Mirrors

The concussive blast of the breaching charge blew a cloud of acrid white smoke into the laboratory, instantly filling the sterile room with the smell of sulfur and burning insulation. Alistair didn't drop the scalpel. Instead, with blinding speed, he hurled the heavy silver voice recorder directly into the open ventilation shaft above the skeletal displays just as the heavy metal grate clattered to the floor.
"Clear! Federal agents, don't move!" a chorus of voices roared through the haze.
Heavy tactical boots thudded against the white-tiled floor as three heavily armed operatives poured into the room, their assault rifles raised and locked onto Alistair and Maya. Agent Miller stepped through the shattered doorway last, his trench coat billowing slightly as he surveyed the gruesome scene.
Miller’s eyes swept over Clara’s body in the pool of blood, then tracked to Julian struggling against the massive block of gray cement on the autopsy table. Finally, his gaze settled on Maya, who still held the flare gun pointed unsteadily toward her father.
"Lower the weapon, Miss Vance," Agent Miller commanded, his voice ice-cold and professional. "Drop it now, or my team will neutralize the threat."
Maya’s hand trembled violently. The weight of the flare gun felt like lead. She looked back at Julian, who was straining so hard against his concrete bonds that fresh blood was soaking through the hardened mortar around his wrists.
"He has the proof... in the ventilation shaft," Maya choked out, lowering the barrel of the flare gun just an inch. "My dad threw the recorder up there. It has everything."
Alistair raised his hands slowly, assuming an expression of wounded, paternal innocence that made Julian’s stomach turn.
"Agent Miller, thank God you're here," Alistair said, his voice dripping with fabricated panic and exhaustion. "My daughter has suffered a severe psychotic break. She attacked my assistant Clara, and when I tried to stop her, she dragged this young man in here and poured industrial concrete over his hands."
Julian let out a raw, incredulous laugh that turned into a sharp cough. "You lying psychopath! You forced me in here—"
"Quiet, Mr. Hayes," Agent Miller snapped, holding up a hand without looking at Julian. He motioned to two tactical officers, who immediately moved in and slammed plastic zip-ties around Alistair’s wrists—though Alistair offered no resistance whatsoever.
Miller walked slowly toward Maya, his eyes narrowing as he assessed her pale face and the blood splattered across her boots.
"Dr. Vance is a very persuasive man, young lady," Miller said quietly, stopping just an arm's length away from her. "He called our emergency hotline twenty minutes ago, reporting a violent intruder and a deranged family member."

Maya stared at Miller in absolute horror. "He called you? Before you breached?"
"Of course," Miller replied, stepping past her to retrieve the orange bucket from the floor. He dipped two fingers into the leftover white sludge inside, rubbing the chemical paste between his thumb and index finger. "And according to the timestamp on his call, you and your father had plenty of time to alter the crime scene before we arrived."
