Chapter 2: Echoes in the Mortar

The bloody ear lay on the cold white tile, pulsing with an unnatural vibrancy against the clinical sterility of the laboratory floor. Maya stumbled backward, her boots slipping slightly in the widening pool of crimson that leaked from beneath the reinforced security door leading to Alistair’s private archive.

"Dad," Maya whispered, her voice trembling as the cruel bravado evaporated from her tone. "Dad, what was that?"

Alistair didn't answer immediately. His gaze shifted from the severed appendage on the floor to the heavy, soundproofed steel door across the room. The hinges of that door were coated in fresh grease, and the electronic keypad glowed with a steady, unauthorized green light. Someone had overridden the biometric lock from the inside.

Julian strained against the heavy gray cement encasing his wrists, the jagged edges of the hardening mixture biting into his skin. He winced, his breath catching as he realized the horrific truth of their situation. They weren't just punishing an intruder; they were trapping witnesses to a much larger, bloodier conspiracy.

"Stay back, Maya," Alistair ordered, his voice dropping into a dangerous register as he reached into his lab coat and pulled out a heavy steel scalpel.

The overhead fluorescent lights flickered once, plunging the room into a brief, heart-stopping twilight before snapping back to their harsh, humming glare. In that fleeting second of darkness, a shadow detached itself from the skeletal displays in the back corner of the laboratory.

"You're too late, Alistair," a rasped voice whispered from the gloom.

A figure stepped forward into the light, clutching the side of their bleeding head where the ear had just been severed. It was Clara, Alistair’s senior research assistant and the only person outside of the Vance family who knew the true purpose of the underground facility. Her white lab coat was soaked in dark red, her face pale from shock and blood loss.

Maya screamed, dropping the orange bucket, which hit the metal table with a dull clang.

Clara took two stumbling steps toward the autopsy table where Julian was trapped in concrete, her eyes locked onto Alistair with venomous betrayal.

"You think encasing his hands will hide the grants?" Clara choked out, coughing up a spray of crimson that spattered across Julian’s shoulder. "The board knows everything. The audits start in twenty-four hours."

Alistair lunged forward with terrifying speed, his scalpel flashing beneath the surgical lights as Clara collapsed to her knees right beside Julian's trapped hands.
