Chapter 14: The Final Foundation

A deafening boom shook the underground vault as a massive ball of orange fire erupted from the service tunnel behind Alistair’s men, blowing the heavy steel entry doors completely off their hinges and sending a wall of superheated air roaring through the chamber.
Alistair stumbled backward, his detonator flying from his hand and clattering across the wet concrete floor.
"Now! Run!" Detective Chen screamed, grabbing Julian by the arm and yanking him toward the emergency drainage spillway at the far end of the vault.
Maya remained frozen at the control console for a fraction of a second as the laptop screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green: TRANSFER COMPLETE. 100% DISTRIBUTED.
"Maya! Move!" Julian yelled over the deafening roar of collapsing concrete and roaring flames.
Alistair lunged forward through the smoke and fire, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage as he reached out to grab his daughter by the hair. "You bitch! You ruined everything!"
Maya spun around, dodging her father’s grasp just as a massive section of the concrete ceiling collapsed directly between them, sending a ton of rubble crashing down into the aisle and completely separating Alistair from the rest of the vault.
Through the cloud of choking dust and falling debris, Julian saw Alistair trapped behind the blockade of stone, screaming curses as the flames engulfed the lower control station.
"Come on, Julian! We have to go!" Maya shouted, grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the open drainage pipe.
Chen was already climbing through the narrow metal tube, signaling frantically for them to follow. Julian didn't hesitate. He dove headfirst into the cool, rushing water of the drainage spillway, pulling Maya in right behind him just as the entire subterranean vault collapsed in on itself with a earth-shattering roar.
Water rushed through the concrete pipe, carrying them swiftly out into the open air of the riverbank beneath the city bridge. They burst through the surface of the water, gasping for breath as they dragged themselves onto the muddy shore, coughing and shivering in the freezing night air.
Sirens wailed in the distance—real sirens this time, accompanied by flashing red and blue lights from dozens of state police cruisers and fire trucks converging on the municipal water plant from every direction.

Julian lay flat on his back in the mud, staring up at the clear, star-filled night sky, his chest heaving with exhaustion. His hands were still scarred and half-coated in hardened gray cement, but the crushing weight in his chest was gone.
Maya sat beside him, hugging her knees to her chest, her face streaked with soot and tears. She watched as the smoke from her father's underground empire finally faded into the cool morning air.
