Chapter 11: The Ambush at the Overlook

The wet gravel dug into Julian’s knees as he was slammed hard against the side of Detective Chen’s car. The pain shooting through his half-healed, cement-scarred wrists was blinding, causing him to cry out in agony.

"Don't move, Mr. Hayes," a gruff, mechanical voice growled near his ear.

Standing over him was a massive man in a heavy tactical vest bearing no insignia, his face hidden behind a dark ballistic mask. Across the hood of the car, Detective Chen was already restrained with heavy-duty zip-ties, her pistol stripped from her holster and tossed into the mud.

"Where is the drive?" a second operative demanded, stepping out from the shadows of the tree line. He held a high-frequency signal jammer that was already glowing with a steady red light, neutralizing the laptop’s connection on the passenger seat.

Julian clenched his jaw, using his body weight to shield his pocket where Clara’s USB drive rested. "I don't know what you're talking about."

The masked operative didn't hesitate. He brought the butt of his tactical rifle down hard across Julian’s shoulder, sending a shockwave of pain through his collarbone. Julian collapsed onto his side, gasping for air as the cold mud soaked into his clothes.

"Dr. Vance sends his regards," the operative muttered, stepping closer to pat down Julian’s jacket.

Suddenly, the harsh glare of high-beam headlights cut through the trees, illuminating the overlook in blinding white. A sleek, black transport van screeched to a halt right behind their position, its side doors sliding open with a sharp mechanical whir.

Stepping out from the van wasn't one of Alistair’s mercenaries. It was Maya.

Her dark t-shirt was stained with dried blood and mud, her blonde hair tangled around her face, but her eyes burned with an icy, absolute resolve that bore an uncanny resemblance to her father’s coldest moments.

"Leave him alone, Thorne," Maya ordered, her voice cutting through the night air with surprising authority.

The masked operative named Thorne paused, his hand hovering over Julian’s jacket pocket. He looked back toward the van, confused. "Miss Vance? Your father gave explicit orders to secure the asset and eliminate the detective."

"My father is currently sitting in a federal holding cell waiting for his lawyers," Maya replied coldly, walking slowly toward them with her hands shoved deep into her pockets. "Which means I am running this operation now."

Thorne hesitated, glancing between Maya and the unconscious radio link to Alistair’s private command channel. "Protocol dictates—"

"Protocol is dead," Maya interrupted, stepping right up to Thorne and staring him down without flinching. She reached out, plucked the USB drive directly from Julian’s torn jacket pocket, and held it up to the amber glow of the headlights. "And if you want to see your final paycheck clear, you're going to help us break into the municipal water plant before federal marshals lock down the grid."

Julian struggled to push himself up from the mud, staring at Maya in profound shock. "Maya... what are you doing?"

Maya turned her head slowly, looking down at Julian with a terrifyingly blank expression. "Saving my own skin, Julian. Just like my father taught me."
