Chapter 4: The Federal Shadow

The black sedan sat idling in the rain-slicked alley, its headlights cutting twin beams of harsh yellow through the gathering fog. On the grainy security monitor, a figure in a heavy trench coat stepped out of the driver's side door, holding a thick manila folder against their chest.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. "That's Agent Vance. No—Agent Miller. He audited the biology department last semester."

"He’s not just auditing," Alistair said, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial whisper as he checked the slide locks on his lab coat. "Miller has been tracking the unauthorized pharmaceutical trials for months. Clara was his primary informant. That’s why she had to be silenced before she could hand over the flash drive."

Julian strained against the concrete, the pain in his wrists radiating up his forearms like liquid fire. "You killed her," Julian muttered, tears of rage blurring his vision. "You killed her in cold blood, and you expect your daughter to help you bury the rest of us?"

Alistair didn't dignify the accusation with a response. Instead, he walked over to the supply shelf, picked up a heavy roll of duct tape, and tossed it onto the metal table near Maya.

"Maya, pick up the tape," Alistair commanded, his tone shifting from paternal to an absolute, chilling authority. "We have less than three minutes before Miller reaches the lower security hatch. If he finds Julian chained in concrete and Clara on the floor, we spend the rest of our lives behind bars."

Maya stared at the roll of duct tape as if it were a venomous snake. Her hands trembled violently. She looked from her father’s stern, unyielding face down to Julian’s bruised, bleeding wrists trapped within the gray stone.

"I won't do it, dad," Maya whispered, backing away until her spine hit the cold metal of the autopsy table. "I’m done covering for your experiments."

Alistair sighed, a sound of profound disappointment, and stepped into her personal space. He reached out, his grip on her shoulder tightening until Maya winced in pain.

"You think you're innocent in this, Maya?" Alistair whispered darkly. "Who poured the cement? Whose fingerprints are all over the orange bucket? If I go down for this, your name is at the top of the indictment. You pulled the trigger of the trap."

Julian watched the exchange, his mind racing past the throbbing agony in his hands. He noticed something glinting beneath Clara’s outstretched palm on the bloody floor—the small, silver casing of a digital voice recorder, its red recording light still blinking steadily in the dark.

"She's right, Alistair," Julian rasped, coughing to draw their attention away from the floor. "You can threaten your daughter all you want, but the recorder in Clara's hand picked up every single word you just said."

Both Alistair and Maya froze. Alistair’s head snapped down toward Clara’s body, his eyes widening in sudden, panicked realization.

Before Alistair could lunge for the recorder, the heavy security door behind them shuddered with three loud, metallic thuds as someone began pounding on the exterior keypad.
