Chapter 12: The Subterranean Vault

The heavy iron door of the municipal water treatment plant’s subterranean vault groaned as Thorne threw his entire weight against it, popping the rusted hydraulic seal with a sharp hydraulic hiss.

A wave of damp, stagnant air rushed out from the dark, cavernous chamber below, smelling strongly of chlorine and ancient concrete. Rows of massive industrial water pipes stretched out into the darkness like the skeletal ribs of some massive, buried beast.

"This is it," Maya said, stepping past Thorne with the ruggedized laptop tucked securely under her arm. The USB drive Clara had given Julian was already plugged into the side port, its indicator light blinking a steady, data-transfer blue.

Julian limped through the doorway behind them, his breath pluming in the chill of the underground vault. Detective Chen followed closely, her hands freed from the zip-ties by Maya during the drive over, though her service weapon remained confiscated.

"You didn't have to bring us here, Maya," Chen said cautiously, keeping her eyes locked on Maya’s back. "You could have turned the drive over to the feds and cut a deal."

Maya stopped at the base of a massive concrete control pedestal that dominated the center of the vault. She turned around, her face illuminated only by the harsh blue glow of the laptop screen.

"The feds belong to my father, Detective," Maya said bitterly, her voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. "Every single judge, every district attorney, every regulatory board—they’ve been bought and paid for by Vance Pharmaceuticals for a decade. If I turn this in to standard authorities, I’ll be found dead in a holding cell by morning, just like Clara."

Julian stepped closer, wincing as his scarred wrists brushed against his jacket. "Then why help us? Why not just destroy the drive and protect your father?"

Maya looked down at the blinking blue light on the laptop, her expression softening for a fraction of a second before hardening back into an impenetrable mask.

"Because my father didn't just fund illegal pharmaceutical trials, Julian," Maya whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "He tested them. On people who asked too many questions. On people who found out what was buried beneath the foundation of this city."

She slammed the laptop down onto the metal control panel and inserted her own thumb into a secondary biometric scanner built into the console. The screen flashed a bright, warning red, demanding an administrative password.

"The password requires a dual-authorization override," Maya said, biting her lower lip. "My father's code, and mine."

Before anyone could speak, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the entrance tunnel behind them. Heavy footsteps—dozens of them—began marching down the concrete steps toward the vault.

"They found us," Thorne muttered, unholstering his tactical sidearm and spinning around to face the dark entryway. "Vance’s security detail must have tracked the van's GPS."

Maya’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror as the silhouette of Alistair Vance himself stepped out from the shadows of the stairwell, flanked by four armed operatives with assault rifles raised.
