Chapter 3: The Surgical Alibi

Clara hit the tiled floor with a sickening thud, her body folding awkwardly beside the metal autopsy table. The pool of blood surrounding her grew rapidly, soaking into the toes of Maya’s boots. Maya stood frozen, her hands still pressed tightly over her mouth, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps.

"Dad... what did you do?" Maya choked out, the reality of her father's darkness finally piercing her denial.

Alistair wiped the stainless-steel scalpel on his dark trousers, his breathing completely steady. He looked down at Clara’s motionless form, then turned his cold, calculating eyes toward Julian. The cement around Julian’s hands had cured into a solid, unyielding block of industrial stone, locking him permanently to the examination table.

"I protected our legacy, Maya," Alistair said softly, stepping over Clara’s body with chilling nonchalance. He reached out and grabbed Julian’s chin, forcing the young man to look directly into his eyes. "You see, Julian was never just an investigator. He’s Clara’s nephew. He came here to finish what she started—exposing how we funded this research."

Julian’s eyes burned with fury and helpless grief. He tried to yank his hands free, but the concrete was fused to the stainless steel bolts running through the table. Every movement shredded the skin on his knuckles, mixing his own blood with the gray dust of the mortar.

"You're a monster," Julian rasped, his voice raw. "The university... they’ll find her. They’ll find me."

"The university will find nothing," Alistair replied calmly, walking over to the wall-mounted intercom. He pressed a sequence of buttons that activated the facility’s emergency sterilization protocol. "According to the official logs, this laboratory was decommissioned three months ago due to a chemical fire. Any unauthorized personnel found inside are trespassers who broke in after-hours."

Maya stared at her father, the horror on her face shifting into a terrifying realization. She had helped him trap Julian. In the eyes of the law, she wasn't just a bystander; she was an accomplice to kidnapping and potentially murder.

"We need to call an ambulance, dad," Maya whispered, backing away toward the heavy security door. "We can say it was an accident. We can fix this."

Alistair smiled, a thin, humorless expression that didn't reach his dead eyes. He pulled a heavy set of brass keys from his pocket and tossed them onto the table, right beside Julian’s cement-locked fists.

"Fix it, then," Alistair challenged smoothly. "The keys to the industrial chisel are in the wall locker. But before you cut him out, look at the security monitor by the door."

Maya slowly turned her head toward the small CRT monitor mounted near the exit. The screen flickered to life, showing the alleyway directly outside the basement entrance. Parked right beneath the flickering streetlamp was a familiar black sedan bearing federal investigation plates.
