Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Banishment

Elena’s crimson hair caught the sharp morning light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the grand entryway, framing her tense, angular jaw. She looked down at Clara, whose bruised cheek throbbed with a dull, sickening heat beneath the tangled strands of brown hair. Clara clutched her black handbag against her stomach like a shield, her knuckles stark white against the dark leather.
"You are not going to humiliate me under my roof!" Elena hissed, her voice slicing through the vaulted space with the precision of a scalpel. She took a sharp step forward, her black silk shirt rustling with repressed fury.
Clara shrank back slightly, tears spilling over her lower lashes to track through the dust on her swollen cheek. "Please stop, I didn't do anything!" she begged, her voice cracking with exhaustion and raw terror.
"Don't lie to me, you ungrateful little parasite!" Elena snarled, her fingers curling into tight fists at her sides as she closed the remaining distance between them. "I saw the bank notifications. I saw what you tried to hide!"
"I didn't touch it, I swear to God I didn't!" Clara cried out, stumbling backward over the imported wool rug as Elena's hands shoved her aggressively toward the heavy oak front door. "Please, just let me explain!"
"Get out! You don't belong here anymore!" Elena screamed, putting her weight behind a final, merciless shove that sent Clara tumbling out onto the cold stone porch.
Clara scrambled to her feet, turning back to face the heavy timber door with tears streaming freely down her face, looking directly into the threshold. "Please, just let me explain!"
"She was leaving. Or you were throwing her out?" a deep, resonant voice cut through the chaos from the dark hallway behind them.
Richard stepped into the light, adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the scene. "Tell me exactly what happened while I was gone."

Elena froze, her hand still resting on the open door frame, her expression shifting from raw anger to sudden, calculating dread as Richard’s gaze fixed on the black handbag clutched in Clara's weeping hands.
