Chapter 12 - The Turning Point

Julian spun around just as Richard tackled him to the concrete floor, sending the electronic detonator skittering across the dusty ground toward the north wall. The two middle-aged brothers locked in a brutal, desperate struggle, rolling across the rough surface, grunting with exertion as decades of buried hatred and sibling rivalry finally boiled over into physical violence.

"Dad! The valve!" Clara screamed at the top of her lungs, straining her body against the chair until the wood creaked and groaned under the pressure.

Richard, pinning Julian’s right arm to the floor with his knee, managed to free one hand and thrust it backward toward the north wall. His fingers grazed the freezing metal of the manual shut-off valve just as Julian brought his heavy boot up, kicking Richard hard in the ribs.

Richard grunted, a sharp pain shooting through his side, but his hand gripped the valve wheel with desperate strength and twisted it hard to the right. With a heavy, metallic clunk, the hissing sound of escaping gas died away, neutralizing the immediate threat of an explosion.

Julian shoved Richard off him with a furious heave, scrambling to his feet while clutching his bruised shoulder. He looked across the floor toward the spot where the detonator had landed, only to find it resting inches from Clara’s bound feet.

Clara hadn't been idle. While the brothers fought, she had managed to wedge the corner of the wooden chair against a protruding bolt in the floor, rocking it back and forth until the front leg snapped with a loud crack. She tumbled sideways to the ground, hitting the cold concrete hard, but her hands—though still tied—were now free of the chair.

Julian cursed under his breath, diving toward her to grab the detonator before she could reach it. But Richard was faster. Still winded from the kick to his ribs, Richard threw his full weight forward, crashing into Julian’s knees and sending both of them sliding across the dust-covered floor into a stack of empty wooden pallets.

The pallets splintered with a deafening crash, burying Julian beneath a mountain of splintered lumber. He groaned, his head lolling to the side as he lost consciousness, blood trickling from a deep cut above his eyebrow.

Richard scrambled up, gasping for air, and rushed over to Clara. He fell to his knees beside her, using his teeth to rip at the thick nylon zip-ties binding her wrists until they finally snapped apart, freeing her bleeding, raw hands.

Clara pulled her hands away, cradling them against her chest, her bruised face stained with tears, dirt, and sweat. She looked down at her father, who was panting heavily, blood staining the knees of his trousers.

"Are you... are you okay?" Richard whispered, his hands trembling as he reached out to touch her shoulder, then hesitated, pulling back as if afraid she would shatter at his touch.

Clara didn't pull away. Instead, she slowly reached out, her trembling fingers wrapping around his wrist. "You came," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Even after you found out... you still came."

May you like

Before Richard could answer, the wail of police sirens filled the warehouse as a half-dozen cruisers burst through the open rolling doors, their flashing red and blue lights washing over the broken pallets and the two brothers lying amidst the wreckage.
