Chapter 11 - The Confrontation at the Docks

The heavy metal sliding door of the warehouse screeched open, letting in a blinding shaft of morning sunlight and the sharp, salty smell of the ocean. Silhouette against the light stood Richard, his dark suit jacket missing, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, his chest heaving with exertion.

"Julian!" Richard’s voice roared through the cavernous space, bouncing off the concrete pillars with the fury of an approaching storm. "Let her go! This is between you and me!"

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly turned away from Clara, stepping into the path of the oncoming light, his hands slid casually into the pockets of his trench coat. A faint, mocking smile played at the corners of his mouth.

"Welcome, brother," Julian called out, his voice echoing evenly across the vast floor. "I was wondering how long it would take you to figure out the puzzle. Though I must admit, you look a bit more desperate than usual."

Richard stopped thirty feet away, his eyes darting immediately to Clara, who was struggling against her bonds in the chair. Seeing the bruises on her face made a muscle twitch violently in Richard's jaw. He took another step forward, but Julian raised a small, matte-black electronic detonator in his left hand.

"Ah-ah," Julian warned, his finger resting lightly on the small red button. "One more step, Richard, and this entire warehouse goes up in a very clean, very final flash. The gas mains were conveniently left open by your lovely wife's associates."

Richard froze, his fists clenching so tightly his fingernails dug into his palms. "She's an eighteen-year-old girl, Julian. She has nothing to do with our past. Whatever score you have to settle with me, take it out on me."

"Our past?" Julian laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "You stole my company, Richard. You ruined my reputation, forced me into exile, and then you had the sheer audacity to raise my own flesh and blood under your roof as a charity case to soothe your own guilty conscience!"

"I didn't know!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "I swear to God, Julian, I didn't know she was your daughter until this morning! Elena lied to me!"

"Elena is a pathetic parasite who only ever cared about your bank accounts," Julian replied coldly. "Just like you care only about your legacy. But Clara... Clara is innocent. Which is precisely why her suffering is the only currency that matters to you now."

Clara managed to wrench her head to the side, her eyes locking onto Richard’s desperate gaze. "Dad! Don't listen to him! He’s bluffing about the gas—I smell sulfur by the north wall, there's a manual shut-off valve right behind my chair!"

Julian’s eyes flashed with sudden annoyance. He took a sharp step toward Clara, his hand raising to strike her across the face for her defiance.

"Don't you dare touch her!" Richard roared, lunging forward with a speed that defied his age, covering the thirty feet between them in a desperate, reckless sprint.
