Chapter 5 - The Surveillance Truth

The mention of the security footage acted like a physical blow. Elena’s hands dropped slowly from her face, her fingers curling into tight fists at her sides. The fierce, aristocratic composure she had maintained since morning finally cracked, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath.

"You don't have footage," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper. "I disabled the hallway cameras last week during the renovations."

Richard’s lips curved into a cold, joyless smile. "You disabled the visible cameras, Elena. The ones the maid cleans. But when you’ve spent thirty years defending corporate executives against industrial espionage, you learn a few things about paranoia. There’s a pinhole lens behind the smoke detector."

Clara slowly pushed herself up from the floor, leaning against the mahogany table for support. "You knew?" she whispered, looking at her father with a mixture of shock and profound relief. "You knew she was doing this all along?"

"I knew something was wrong with the household accounts months ago," Richard replied, never taking his eyes off his wife. "I didn't want to believe it was Elena. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, to assume it was a misunderstanding, a bad investment, anything other than calculated betrayal."

Elena let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that echoed off the high ceiling. "You think you're so smart, Richard, don't you? Sitting in your high-rise office, playing God with everyone's lives. You drove me to this! You haven't looked at me in ten years as anything more than a piece of furniture to decorate your foyer!"

"Is that why you decided to ruin my daughter's life?" Richard’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper, the anger burning beneath his calm exterior threatening to break through. "Framing an eighteen-year-old for wire fraud so you could clear out the trust fund before the divorce papers were even drawn?"

"She's not your daughter!" Elena screamed, the mask of restraint shattering completely as she lunged forward, pointing a trembling finger at Clara's bruised face. "She’s the living proof of your infidelity! Every time I looked at her face, I saw the woman you left me for!"

The silence that followed was absolute. The emergency lights clicked off, and the main power surged back on with a loud hum, flooding the entryway with harsh, unforgiving white light.

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at Elena, then slowly turned her head to look up at Richard, whose face had gone completely pale.

"What... what did she just say?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling as the black handbag slipped from her fingers and hit the floor with a dull thud.

May you like

Richard didn't answer. He stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the floor, while Elena smiled a cold, jagged smile of ultimate destruction.
