Chapter 3 - The Weight of the Ledger

The crisp paper trembled slightly in Richard’s hand, the corporate letterhead of Zurich Global Wealth Management gleaming under the chandelier. Elena stared at the document, the blood draining entirely from her face, leaving her skin the color of old parchment. The righteous fury that had fueled her screaming match with Clara moments earlier vanished, replaced by a cold, animalistic panic.

"Where did you get that?" Elena whispered, her voice losing its polished edge.

"That doesn't matter," Richard replied, his tone chillingly level. "What matters is that these accounts were opened using Clara’s social security number. Someone has been systematically setting her up for federal wire fraud over the past six months, using this very house as a proxy."

Elena stepped back, her heel catching the edge of the Persian rug. "She’s lying to you. Clara is manipulative, she’s unstable, she’s—"

"She’s eighteen years old, Elena, and she has a concussion," Richard interrupted, his voice cutting her off instantly. He walked past her toward the front door, pulling it open. "Clara. Get back inside."

Clara stood up slowly, clutching the black handbag against her chest like a lifeline. She walked back into the entryway, her eyes bloodshot, avoiding Elena’s venomous glare.

"Dad, the laptop is in the bag," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible. "The original documents. The ones she didn't think I downloaded from her home office."

Elena lunged forward with a strangled cry, her hand clawing toward the black handbag, but Richard caught her wrist with a grip of steel. He twisted her arm back just enough to halt her momentum, his eyes burning into hers with a fury that dwarfed her own.

"Enough," Richard commanded. He released her wrist and turned to Clara, holding out his hand. "Open the bag, sweetheart. Let’s see what we’re dealing with."

Clara’s trembling fingers fumbled with the brass zipper of the heavy leather bag. She pulled it apart, reaching deep inside past a crumpled pack of tissues and a tube of lip balm to retrieve a sleek, silver laptop with a cracked screen. She laid it flat on the mahogany console table.

"Enter the password, Clara," Richard urged gently.

Clara typed a quick sequence, the screen flickering to life to reveal a folder labeled Evidence.
