Chapter 10 - Blood and Betrayal

The damp chill of the warehouse clung to Clara’s skin, making her shiver beneath the thin fabric of her white knit sweater. She pulled against the heavy nylon zip-ties biting into her wrists, wincing as the rough plastic dug into her bruised flesh. She glared at the man crouching in front of her, the resemblance to Richard unmistakable in the sharp line of the jaw and the cold, intelligent gleam in the eyes.
"You're Julian," Clara said, her voice raspy from crying, the words carrying no fear—only a bitter, searing defiance. "Richard's brother. The uncle who vanished thirty years ago after the hostile takeover."
Julian smiled, a surprisingly gentle expression that felt entirely out of place in the grim, industrial setting. He stood up slowly, dusting off the knees of his trousers. "Smart girl. It seems intelligence really does run in the family—though thankfully, you inherited my resilience rather than Richard's blind arrogance."
"Why am I here?" Clara demanded, straining against the chair. "What do you want with me? If you want money, Richard has plenty—though I suppose you already know that, considering you helped Elena drain the accounts."
Julian chuckled softly, walking over to a rusted metal drum that served as an improvised desk. He picked up a thick, leather-bound ledger with water-damaged pages and flipped through them casually. "Money? Money is just a scorecard, Clara. Richard thinks he won because he kept the corporate title, the mansion, and the social standing. But he forgot one fundamental rule of business: you can't own a person."
"I am not property!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I am a human being! You and Elena both treat people like chess pieces!"
Julian stopped flipping the pages and looked up, his expression hardening just a fraction. "Elena is a fool who played her part and outlived her usefulness. As for you, Clara... you are the key to everything Richard holds dear. For twenty years, he has raised my child, poured his hopes into my bloodline, while believing he was securing his own legacy."
Clara’s breath hitched. The room seemed to tilt slightly as the implications of his words slammed into her chest. "Wait... you planned this? You planted those accounts? You made Elena frame me?"
"Elena didn't need much encouragement," Julian said smoothly, stepping back into her line of sight. "She was already desperate to get rid of you before you discovered the truth about your trust fund. I simply... facilitated her paranoia."
"Why?" Clara whispered, tears welling up in her eyes once more. "Why do this to me? What did I ever do to you?"
"You didn't do anything, my dear," Julian said, reaching out to gently cup her chin with his cold fingers. "You were simply the leverage I needed to bring Richard to his knees. And look—here he comes now."

Outside, the heavy screech of tires tearing across gravel cut through the damp air, followed by the sound of a car door slamming shut against the concrete.
