Chapter 9 - The Basement Countdown

The interior of warehouse four-B smelled of old motor oil, damp concrete, and fear. Rows of empty wooden pallets stretched out into the gloom, casting long, skeletal shadows under the flickering glow of a single overhead sodium vapor lamp. Viktor moved with absolute silence, his boots making no sound against the gritty concrete floor as he cleared each aisle with swift, practiced sweeps of his weapon. Elena followed closely behind, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird as she scanned the darkness for any sign of her younger sister.

"Over here," Viktor muttered, gesturing toward a heavy iron reinforced door set into the back wall of the warehouse, partially concealed behind a stack of rusted oil drums. A faint red LED glow emanated from beneath the crack of the door, accompanied by the muffled, rhythmic ticking of a digital timer.

Elena gasped, breaking past Viktor’s shoulder and rushing toward the door. She threw her weight against the heavy metal slab, but it didn't budge—it was locked tight with a heavy-duty digital keypad deadbolt.

"Maya!" Elena screamed, pounding her bruised fists desperately against the cold iron surface. "Maya, can you hear me?!"

From the other side of the door, a small, muffled voice whimpered in response, sounding weak and terrified.

"Elena? Is that you? Please get me out of here, the red numbers are almost at zero!"

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat, absolute panic overtaking her senses as she frantically punched random numbers into the glowing keypad, instantly triggering a loud, shrill warning beep that signaled a failed entry lock.

"Step back," Viktor commanded firmly, grabbing her by the shoulders and pulling her safely out of the line of fire.

Viktor holstered his pistol and drew a small, compact electronic device from his belt—a military-grade frequency analyzer he used for corporate security sweeps. He slammed the magnetic pad against the side of the digital keypad, watching the tiny green LED light on his device flash rapidly as it began brute-forcing the encryption algorithm of the lock. The ticking sound from inside the room seemed to grow louder, echoing off the concrete walls like a countdown to execution.

"Come on, work," Viktor muttered under his breath, his muscular forearm tensing as he waited for the override sequence to complete.

Elena wrung her hands together, tears streaming freely down her bruised face as she stared at the glowing red numbers she could see faintly through the reinforced wired glass window of the door. The timer read 00:04:12—four minutes and twelve seconds left before the unknown device inside detonated or sealed the room permanently.

"Viktor, hurry!" Elena cried out, her voice breaking on the edge of hysteria. "There isn't much time left!"

Suddenly, a loud, heavy clack echoed through the warehouse as the magnetic lock disengaged, the red LED shifting instantly to a brilliant, welcoming green. Viktor didn't hesitate for a single microsecond; he gripped the heavy iron handle, wrenched the door open, and stepped inside the pitch-black concrete cell, with Elena right behind him.

The beam of Viktor's flashlight cut through the dust, illuminating a small, damp room where a young girl with terrified eyes was tied to a chair. But before they could even reach her, the heavy metal door behind them slammed shut with a sickening thud, and the exterior deadbolt slid into place with a definitive click.
