Chapter 6 - Red Dots in the Dark

The tiny red dot burned against the grey fabric of Elena's maid dress, dancing erratically over her heart like a lethal firefly. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat as the realization of what it was paralyzed her limbs. She didn't dare move a muscle, every instinct screaming that a single twitch would mean instant death.

"Viktor..." she choked out, her voice barely a breath of air.

Before the name had even fully left her lips, Viktor was moving with terrifying, inhuman speed. He lunged across the foyer, his powerful arms wrapping around Elena's waist and tackling her violently to the floor just as a deafening crack shattered the night air. A high-powered sniper round punched clean through the heavy oak door behind them, sending a shower of wood splinters raining down over their heads. Glass shards crunched beneath Viktor as he pressed his muscular body over hers, shielding her completely with his broad shoulders and the thick wool of his suit jacket.

"Stay down!" Viktor barked into her ear, his hand sliding down to firmly grip the heavy-duty tactical pistol he had drawn from his ankle holster.

Elena buried her face against his chest, her hands clutching his shirt as her entire body shook uncontrollably. The smell of gunsmoke and expensive cologne filled her senses, mixing with the metallic tang of fresh blood—not hers this time, but a thin trickle running down Viktor’s neck from a graze near his collarbone.

"They found us," Elena sobbed quietly against his chest. "Marcus must have sent a signal before he passed out."

"Marcus is bleeding out on the floor; he didn't send anything," Viktor growled, his eyes scanning the shattered windows and the darkened perimeter outside with lethal focus. "This is professional. Which means our security perimeter has been breached from the outside."

Another round slammed into the stone pillar near the staircase, showering them in white dust and stone chips. Viktor didn't flinch. He adjusted his grip on the firearm, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line. He knew the layout of Blackwood Manor better than anyone alive, every blind spot, every fortified bulkhead, and every hidden escape route. But he also knew that whoever was out there had the house completely surrounded, cutting off their primary vehicles in the front courtyard.

"Can we make it to the garage?" Elena asked, her voice trembling as she peeked up past his shoulder to look at the smoking bullet hole in the door.

"Not through the front," Viktor replied, his mind calculating their survival odds in fractions of a second. "The courtyard is a killing zone. We take the service tunnels beneath the kitchen."

Viktor gripped her uninjured hand, pulling her up from the floor with effortless strength. He kept his body positioned between her and the shattered windows, shielding her as they retreated backward toward the kitchen. The adrenaline pumping through his veins kept the pain of his own injuries at bay, but he could feel Elena’s stamina wearing dangerously thin. Her pale face was slick with cold sweat, and her bruised arms trembled visibly under the strain of the night's horrors.

They burst back into the luxury kitchen just as a heavy thud echoed from the front porch—heavy boots kicking the main entrance open. Viktor slammed the heavy wooden kitchen door shut, throwing the thick deadbolt into place with a resounding clack. He didn't waste a second. He strode over to the stainless steel island, gripping the edge of the marble countertop and pulling upward with immense force. With a loud mechanical groan, a hidden section of the stone floor slid aside, revealing a dark, descending concrete stairwell swallowed by absolute blackness.

"Go," Viktor ordered, gesturing down into the damp abyss. "Don't look back."

Elena hesitated for only a split second, staring down into the terrifying dark, before taking a brave step forward and descending into the tunnel. Viktor followed right behind her, pulling a small tactical flashlight from his belt and clicking it on just as the heavy front kitchen door began to splinter under the relentless battering ram of their unseen pursuers.
