Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Dark

The sudden crash shattered the fragile tension in the kitchen, echoing through the cavernous halls of Blackwood Manor like a gunshot. Elena flinched violently, clutching Viktor’s heavy suit jacket tighter around her bruised shoulders as her eyes darted toward the dark corridor leading to the grand staircase. Viktor didn’t blink. His muscular frame tensed instantly, every ounce of his relaxed posture vanishing as he morphed into a predator tracking an intrusion. The silver bowl slipped from Elena's soapy fingers, clattering loudly against the bottom of the sink, but neither of them paid it any mind. The silence that followed the crash was heavier, suffocating, and charged with an imminent threat that neither of them could afford to ignore.

Viktor stepped past her, his hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. He paused, casting a sharp, protective glance back at Elena, whose face had gone completely pale.

"Stay here," Viktor ordered in a low, non-negotiable tone, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce intensity.

"I'm not hiding anymore, Viktor," Elena whispered back, her voice shaking but laced with a sudden, desperate defiance. "Whoever is up there... they're looking for me."

Viktor’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his dark beard. Without another word, he turned and strode out of the kitchen, his long strides eating up the distance to the main hallway. Elena hesitated for only a fraction of a second before following him, her bare feet making no sound against the cold marble floor. The luxury mansion felt entirely different at night, transformed from a pristine showcase of wealth into a labyrinth of shadows and secrets. As they reached the foot of the sweeping staircase, the faint smell of expensive bourbon and iron reached their noses. It was a scent Elena knew all too well, one that instantly filled her veins with a paralyzing cocktail of dread and rage.

At the landing above, a tall figure stepped out of the shadows, silhouetted by the moonlight pouring through the arched stained-glass window. It was Marcus, Viktor’s own younger brother and the silent financial partner of the estate, holding a shattered crystal decanter in his right hand. His knuckles were dripping with fresh blood, and a twisted, cruel smirk played across his lips as he looked down at them.

"Well, look who decided to crawl out of the servant quarters together," Marcus drawled, his voice slurred and dripping with toxic venom. "Playing savior again, big brother? Or are you finally collecting what’s owed to you?"

Viktor didn't flinch, but his eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he took the first step up the stairs, blocking Elena completely from Marcus's line of sight.

"Put the glass down, Marcus, and go to your room before I forget we share blood," Viktor warned, his voice dangerously quiet.

Marcus let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed off the high ceilings, his eyes darting past Viktor’s broad shoulders to lock onto Elena with a predatory gleam.

"You think you can protect her from what's coming, Viktor?" Marcus sneered, raising his bloody hand to point a trembling finger directly at Elena. "She knows the truth about the missing accounts, and she's the one who signed the transfer orders."
