Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Lies

The accusation hung in the damp, chilled air of the grand foyer like a physical blow. Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as the blood drained entirely from her face. She took a staggering step backward, the heavy wool of Viktor’s suit jacket slipping slightly off her bruised shoulder.

"That's a lie!" Elena cried out, her voice cracking with pure panic. "I didn't touch the accounts! You know I didn't have access to the main vault!"

Marcus chuckled darkly, taking a slow, swaying step down the polished oak stairs, ignoring the shards of crystal crunching beneath his leather shoes. His eyes were wide, glassy, and unhinged, fueled by a toxic mix of alcohol and desperation.

"Oh, sweet, innocent Elena," Marcus mocked, tilting his head with a sickening display of false sympathy. "You think because Viktor took you in off the streets, you're part of the family? You're just an employee with a convenient signature. I found the backup flash drive in your cleaning cart this afternoon. Right beneath your spare rags."

Viktor slowly turned his head, his dark eyes shifting from his unhinged brother back to Elena. The silence that stretched between them was agonizing. Elena’s breath hitched, her chest heaving as she saw the shadow of doubt cross Viktor’s usually unreadable expression.

"Viktor, you can't possibly believe him," Elena pleaded, her voice dropping to a desperate, broken whisper. "Look at me. Look at what he did to my arms, to my face. Do you really think I'm the one stealing from you?"

Viktor stared at her for a long, torturous moment, his mind working beneath the surface like a machine calculating odds and risks. He remembered the bruised flesh he had seen in the kitchen just minutes ago, the raw fear in her eyes when she thought she was alone. But he also knew the ruthless game his brother played, a game where collateral damage was merely a byproduct of survival.

"Marcus," Viktor said, his voice dropping into that icy, dangerous register that made even hardened criminals back away. "Drop the drive. Now."

Marcus stopped descending the stairs, a manic grin spreading across his face as he reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small, black USB drive, dangling it dangerously over the edge of the stair railing.

"You want it, brother? You want to protect your little pet project?" Marcus taunted, his fingers loosening slightly. "Come and get it. But the moment I let go, the encryption hits the federal servers. Everything we built—everything you built—goes down in flames."

Elena squeezed her eyes shut, a fresh tear escaping and tracking down her bruised cheek. She realized then that Marcus wasn't just trying to frame her; he was forcing Viktor into an impossible corner, testing his loyalty to his business empire against his burgeoning feelings for a broken maid.

Viktor took a slow, measured breath, his massive shoulders rising and falling beneath his pristine white shirt as he began to climb the stairs toward his brother, his eyes locked onto the small piece of plastic in Marcus's hand.

"You're making a mistake you won't survive, Marcus," Viktor whispered, closing the distance step by step.

Marcus laughed maniacally, his thumb twitching over the edge of the drive, ready to drop it at the slightest provocation.

"Let's see who survives," Marcus hissed, and with a swift, sickening flick of his wrist, he tossed the drive straight up into the air toward the glass chandelier above.
