Chapter 11 - The Razor's Edge

Elena’s fingernails scraped desperately against the stubborn plastic zip-ties binding her sister’s wrists to the rusted metal chair. Every desperate pull aggravated her own swollen joints and bruised forearms, sending sharp stabs of pain radiating up her arms, but she refused to stop. The digital timer mounted to the base of the chair flashed its relentless crimson numbers downward, the steady, rhythmic beeping growing faster and more frantic with every passing second. The air in the confined concrete basement felt instantly heavier, thick with the metallic scent of old dust and rising panic. Viktor stepped forward, his massive frame blocking out the dim overhead bulb as he knelt down beside them without a single wasted movement.
"Stop pulling with your bare hands, Elena," Viktor commanded in a low, controlled register that cut effortlessly through the rising hysteria.
Without waiting for permission, Viktor reached into the inner pocket of his ruined suit jacket and extracted a heavy-duty, multi-purpose tactical knife. He flicked the blade open with a practiced motion, the cold steel catching the harsh red light of the countdown. He angled the blade with terrifying precision, sliding it beneath the heavy plastic restraints biting into Maya’s skin. With two quick, effortless slicing motions, the ties snapped apart, freeing the terrified girl's wrists. Maya immediately lunged forward, throwing her thin arms around her older sister's neck and sobbing uncontrollably into her tattered grey uniform shoulder.
"I've got you, Maya, you're safe now," Elena whispered fiercely, holding her sister close while tears carved fresh tracks through the dirt and sweat on her bruised face.
Viktor ignored the emotional reunion for a crucial fraction of a second, his intense gaze fixed entirely upon the modified explosive device wired directly into the base of the chair. It was not a standard timer; it was an industrial-grade remote demolition charge connected to a localized frequency receiver. The flashing red numbers now read 00:01:15, leaving barely over a minute before detonation. He could easily disarm the central wiring if he had his secure toolkit, but that equipment was sitting inside the locked trunk of his sedan back at Blackwood Manor, miles away from this godforsaken pier.
"Listen to me very carefully," Viktor said, his voice hard as iron as he grabbed Elena by the shoulder, forcing her to look directly into his dark, unyielding eyes. "We don't have enough time to crack the secondary housing without triggering a dead-man's switch."
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat, her eyes widening in sheer horror as she realized what he was implying. She shook her head violently, her hands gripping the lapels of his heavy wool jacket.
"No, Viktor, we can't leave you here!" Elena cried out, her voice cracking with pure anguish. "There has to be another way out of this room!"
Viktor didn't blink. He reached down, swept Maya up into his powerful arms despite her protests, and thrust the young girl firmly into Elena's hesitant grasp toward the heavy iron doorway.

"There is only one way out, and it's through the ventilation shaft near the ceiling," Viktor stated, pointing his tactical flashlight upward toward the rusted metal grate. "Get Maya up there right now."
