Chapter 1 - The Midnight Confronration

The water running through the stainless steel kitchen sink sounded deafening in the dead of night, a sharp contrast to the suffocating silence of Blackwood Manor. Elena stood at the sink, her hands trembling as she scrubbed a heavy, ornate silver bowl. Her breath hitched in her throat, catching painfully on a bruised rib every time she exhaled. Tears blurred her vision, hot and exhausting, sliding down a cheek already discolored by a deep, purplish contusion. She wore her standard uniform, a grey maid dress with a crisp white collar and apron, but the fabric felt like sandpaper against her battered skin. She wiped her tearful face with the back of a shaking forearm, wincing as the motion aggravated a swollen wrist.

The heavy wooden doorway creaked open, slicing a wedge of shadow across the polished marble floor. Viktor stepped into the kitchen, his tall, muscular frame radiating an imposing, dangerous presence. His black suit was immaculate, the white shirt beneath unwrinkled despite the late hour, his dark beard neatly trimmed and his slicked-back hair catching the dim overhead light. He stared at her with intense, calculating eyes, his footsteps completely silent against the stone. Elena froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She desperately tried to angle her body to hide the worst of her injuries, keeping her gaze fixed firmly on the gleaming metal surface of the bowl.

Viktor closed the distance between them, his jaw tightening as he took in the unmistakable signs of violence marring her young face and exposed arms.

Elena spoke softly, her voice barely a whisper above the running water,

"Boss, I thought everyone was asleep."

Viktor stepped closer, his own bruised face catching the light, revealing a subtle fracture along his cheekbone that he usually managed to conceal. He looked at her with an intensity that bordered on fierce concern, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register,

"Why are you crying?"

Elena crossed her arms defensively, her body shaking from a combination of cold water, exhaustion, and rising panic. She glared at him through her tears, snapping back with a brittle edge,

"I'm fine."

Viktor narrowed his eyes, taking another deliberate step forward, his voice cutting through her weak defense like a blade,

"Don't lie to me."

He reached out, his large hands moving with unexpected gentleness as he removed his expensive suit jacket. Without a word, he draped the heavy wool garment around her shivering shoulders, the fabric instantly radiating his body heat. He pinned her with a gaze that demanded total honesty, asking the question that had been hanging heavy in the charged air,

"Tell me who hurt you."

May you like

Elena stared up at him, her chest heaving as she opened her mouth to feed him another safe lie, but before a single word could escape, a sudden, violent crash echoed from the dark hallway upstairs.
