Chapter 4 - Shattered Glass and Confessions

The small black USB drive spun erratically through the air, reflecting the amber glow of the chandelier lights before striking one of the heavy crystal pendants with a sharp ping. The impact sent a spiderweb fracture rippling through the glass, followed immediately by an ominous metallic groan from the ceiling anchor above.

"Viktor, look out!" Elena screamed, lunging forward despite her battered body, her instincts overriding her fear.

Viktor didn't look up at the falling debris; instead, he lunged sideways with explosive speed, tackling his brother Marcus off the stairs just as the massive iron chain of the chandelier snapped. With a deafening roar of shattering crystal and splintering wood, the multi-ton light fixture crashed down onto the exact spot where the two brothers had been standing a second earlier. Dust and fiberglass particles exploded into the air, turning the grand foyer into a blinding, choking white cloud. Elena coughed violently, shielding her face with Viktor's jacket as the shockwave washed over her, the ringing in her ears drowning out all other sound.

As the dust slowly settled, revealing a massive crater of broken crystal and twisted metal where the staircase landing used to be, two figures began to move amidst the wreckage. Viktor pushed himself up from the debris, coughing as he wiped a streak of soot and blood from his forehead. His black suit was torn at the shoulder, and a deep scratch ran down his forearm, but his eyes immediately scanned the area in a frantic search.

"Elena!" Viktor barked, his voice cutting through the lingering haze of plaster dust.

"I'm here!" she called out, stepping out from behind the heavy oak pillar near the hallway entrance. She was shaking from head to toe, her grey maid dress covered in a fine layer of white powder, but she was miraculously unhurt.

Viktor let out a ragged breath of relief, turning his attention to the tangled heap of wreckage beneath the fallen chandelier. Marcus was groaning beneath a heavy mahogany beam that had pinned his legs to the floor, his face pale with shock and pain. The USB drive lay a few feet away from Marcus’s outstretched, bloody hand, miraculously intact amidst the sea of broken glass. Viktor strode over, ignoring his own injuries, and kicked the drive away into a dark corner before bending down to haul the heavy beam off his brother.

"You're insane, Marcus," Viktor grunted, his muscular arms bulging as he lifted the timber with sheer brute force, tossing it aside like a matchstick. "You could have killed us all."

Marcus spat a mouthful of blood onto the ruined marble, a pathetic, defeated wheeze escaping his lips as he clutched his shattered right leg.

"You think... you won?" Marcus gasped, his eyes rolling back slightly as shock set in. "Check... check the security logs, Viktor. She was in the vault... at midnight... three nights ago."

Viktor froze, his hands hovering over his injured brother. He slowly raised his head, his dark eyes locking onto Elena across the ruined foyer. The tension in the air snapped back into place, thicker and more toxic than before. Elena felt the blood drain from her face as Viktor's expression hardened into a mask of cold, agonizing suspicion.

"Elena," Viktor said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stood up and turned to face her. "Did you open the vault three nights ago?"

Elena opened her mouth to deny it, but the words caught in her throat as she realized the horrifying truth of what security logs could fabricate.

"I... I had to," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she backed away toward the front door. "They told me if I didn't open it... they would kill my sister."
