Chapter 9 - Smoke on the Stairs

The deafening blast shook the ancient stone foundation of the lighthouse so violently that the glass panes in the lantern room rattled in their iron frames. Lily shrieked in terror, wrapping her small arms tightly around Arthur’s waist as thick, acrid black smoke began billowing up the central spiral staircase like an invading monster.

"What is that? Who is down there?" Elena screamed, her composure instantly shattering as she dropped the digital tablet, pulling a small silver pistol from her holster with shaking hands.

Miller spun around toward the doorway, raising his weapon as he squinted into the rising cloud of dark smoke. "It's an explosive charge! We’ve been compromised!"

"Compromised by whom? You said this location was entirely secure!" Elena shrieked, glaring furiously at the corrupt detective.

"I don't know! It could be federal agents or a rival faction cutting our losses!" Miller yelled back, backing away from the stairs as heavy footsteps echoed up the stone steps through the smoke.

Arthur seized the momentary chaos. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, he grabbed Lily and shoved her behind the heavy iron housing of the lighthouse lens, out of the direct line of fire.

"Stay right here, Lily, no matter what happens," Arthur whispered fiercely, his eyes locked on the chaotic scene unfolding across the room.

Before Elena or Miller could raise their weapons to stop him, a figure emerged from the smoke at the top of the stairs, coughing heavily. It wasn't federal agents. It was a man wearing a heavy leather jacket and a tactical vest, holding an assault rifle pointed directly at Miller’s chest.

"Drop your weapons! Federal task force, drop them now!" the man bellowed, his voice cutting cleanly through the howling wind and roaring fire below.

Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting between the armed operative and Elena. With a lightning-fast motion, Miller raised his pistol, but the federal agent was faster. A single deafening gunshot echoed through the enclosed glass chamber.

Miller gasped, dropping his weapon as he clutched his chest, stumbling backward against the railing before collapsing onto the stone floor in a pool of dark blood.

Elena screamed in pure panic, turning her pistol toward Arthur and Lily with a manic look in her eyes. "If I go down, you all go down with me!" she shrieked, pulling the trigger.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He lunged across the room, tackling Elena just as the gun went off, sending the bullet shattering harmlessly through the thick glass window into the stormy night sky.

The two of them crashed heavily onto the dusty stone floor, rolling violently near the edge of the open balcony door as the wind whipped their hair into a frenzy. Elena clawed viciously at Arthur’s face, her fingernails drawing blood down his cheek as she tried to break free from his grip.

"You can't win, Arthur! The world thinks you're the criminal!" Elena snarled, pressing a small detonator button hidden in the palm of her hand.

Arthur’s eyes widened as a series of remote explosive charges strapped to the lower levels of the lighthouse began to detonate in rapid succession, tearing the ancient stone walls apart from the inside out.

The floor beneath them violently tilted to the left as a massive chunk of masonry collapsed into the fiery abyss below, leaving Elena dangling by her fingertips over the edge of the open balcony.
